Editor A ic Example. It is a humiliating fact that maudlin pity and mawkish senti ment is so pervertedly uppermost in the minds of a good many peo ple in this loving land of ours that that the will lavish sympathy and attention on rascals whose most pressing need is a good black snake whip well laid on. To read the reports of Frank .Tames' "re ception" by the governor of Mis sourir one would almost suppose he was some great public benefactor in place of a murderous cutthroat. Tn "surrendering," he gave up his revolver with due dignitj' and was treated with distinguished consid eration. As an exchange truth' fully says: "What can be expected of our boys when they see crime re warded in this way? "What in centive is there to be true, upright and good, when the chief execu tive of a state so honors a thief and murderer as Governor Critten den has done? That governor ought to be impeached. It is bad enough that the shelves of our book stores are loaded with books calculated to give false ideas of life, when crime and wickedness is taught in stores, clothed in tempting guise. This sort of influence is bad enough, but when a man of high official positi on does public honor to such a man as Frank James, ;i murderer and thief, when he covers all these crimes with a glamour of romance of chivalry he de moralizes all the sentiment of good we would encourage in honest, upright living. Poor James! He is not allowed to rob trains and murder innocent people un molested. For such frivolous things as those a reward was offered for his capture, and so, to live in any sort of peace he was obliged to surrender, and for hours after that ceremony he was obliged to stand in a room and submit to the ordeal of handshaking with -4iundyrdg-o6 admiring people, all because he wanted te kill aud steal, and Missouri folks did not like to have him do it.' Tin: New York Ilerald in a foaming article sa-s that Pacific coast politicians have bulldozed the federal government so success full in the matter of Chinese, im migration, that they ate working themselves up to demand supple mentary legislation of a prohibi tory character at a no distant day in the matter of Chiiie.se imports. "They ask congress to forbid the coming of Chinese labor into 33 states in order to protect three of them California, Nevada and Oregon, whose united population is less than this city from its competition on American soil, and congress yielded to the request and has thut Chinese laborers out of New York because they are unwelcome in San Francisco. Now they are growing fearful that the excluded Chinamen will soon become successful competitors al though restricted to working on Asiatic soil, and accordingly they arc proposing to petition congress further to shut Chinese manufac turers out of the whrle country, New York included. 'San Fran cisco newspapers arc looking for ward to the time when Chinamen at hontH will manufacture for themselves and so cheap that they not only can supply their own markets, but ours as well, unless congress comes to the rescue with the protective customs duties which will eclipse the most extra ordinary provisions of the present tariff." Some of the men who were on the losing side twentj years ao in Kentucky under the spirited leadership of John Morgan, have formed a permanent organizatien: 300 of them lately met in Lexing ton, Ivy., and in a side hall hung the stars and bars while from the front of the building floated the stars and stripes. Eastern politicians affect that Blaine, in his denial that he has the presidential itch, is only craft ily posing for nomination. No man in the Union would more worthily fill the presidential chair than Jas. G. Blaine, of Maine; no name ou a Republican electoral .ticket would have more likelihood of carrying the Pacific coast. Wz should be sorry to hear that the agent now here had succeeded in coaxing the Astoria Transpor tation company to sell its barge, j That organization has demon-' strated the fact that money can be made lightering grain at half the former rates, and if necessan, there should be concentrated ac tion on the part of our citizens to keep the barge in active service. The company deserves praise for1 having so practically and effectu ally silenced the plaint of costly ' lighterage, and, whichever way it goes, an important point has bei-n made, and a lesson taught that will not be forgotten. The fact that Wells, Fargo & Co. liavo been able to succssfully maintain :i postal rate on matter lusher than the regular charcre will be used by the postmaster- ; general as an argument in oppo- j sition to a reduction of tiie three- cent rate by congress, and b tin assistant p. m. g. as an argument that that service should not be allowed to continue. It would be an injustice to debar Wells, Fargo and Co. from carrying letters on this coast. A Washington dispatch says it is believed that some of the aged clerks in the postofiice department will be weeded out on the first of the month. -Many of them are said to be incapacitated from duty. The Star says some removals will aiso be made because clerks refused to pay assessments. Tun proprietor of the Xew York Herald has tired of the "Western Union Telegraph Co.'s exactions, and is going to have a competing line. Two million dol lars is already employed in build ing a cable to Europe. A jai:ty of American merch ants doing business in northern South America were recently attacked and captured by some Indians who killed, cooked and ate their unfortunate captives. It is thought that the postal authorities will exclude from the mail all circulars, etc., emanating from so called marriage insurance - companies. Gkkat excitement is occa sioned in France by the sudden and severe illness of President Grevj'. NEW TO-DAY AUCTION SALE. Saturday, "flov. 18tli, 11 A. g.
