Journal's correspondents report no yel
low fever in the south, but some sort
of sickness seeras to have been caused
by the disinterment of the bodies of
persons who died of yellow fever.
New Yokk, Feb. 1L The Brook
lyn health officers charge that a num
ber of cows suffering from pleuro
pneumonia have been taken from the
stables and slaughtered at the abattoir.
The Carcases are now under guard
until veterinary surgeons investigate
them.
Washington, Feb. 11. The river
and harbor appropriation bill reported
to the house to-day contains the fol
lowing appropriations for the Pacific
coast : Oakland, $30,000 ; Wilming
ton, 11,000; Willamette and Colum
bia rivers, $45,000; Coos Bay, $40,
000; Upper Columbia river, $10,000;
canal at the Cascades of the Columbia
river, $50,000.

St. Vincent, Jan. 30. On the 21st
inst. a British column consisting of
a portion of the 24th regiment, a
battery of artillery and 600 native
auxiliaries were utterly annihilated near
Tuquela river by 20,000 Zulus, who
captured a valuable convoy of 102 wag
ons, 1,000 oxen, two cannon, 400 shot
and shell, 1,000 rifles, 25,000 rounds of
ammunition, 60,000 pounds weight of
provisions, and the colors of the 24th
regiment. It is estimated that 5,000
Nulus were killed and wounded in the
battle. Among the killed on the
British side are two majors, four cap
tains, twelve lieutenants and a
quartermaster of the 24th regiment;
two captains of the royal artillery; a
colonel, captain, four lieutenants, ser
geant and major of engineers, besides
twenty other British officers command
ing native levies. Seven attacks, sub-

been repulsed, and the colony is now
somewhatrecoveringfrom the utter con
sternation which at first prevailed.
Lord Chehnsford,commanderof the ex
pedition, has been forced to retire in
consequence of the defeat. It is esti
mated that 500 soldiers were killed be
sides the officers stared. Governor Sir
Bartle Freere has sent to England for
reinforcements. The mail steamer for
England was dispatched a day earlier
than usual with a request for six regi
ments of infantry and a brigade of
cavalry. Details of the disaster show
that the guns were spiked before they
were captured.
London, Feb. 11. A summons was
issued tins morning ioracauiuoouuun
cil to be held at 2 o'clock this after
noon to deliberate on the reverses to
British troops m Zulu land. News of
the defeat has caused a sensation
throughout London.
London, Feb. 11. The cabinet
council to-day decided to send six bat
tallions of infantry, two regiments of
cavalrj', two batteries of artillery, a
company of engineers, three companies
of army service corps, and a company
of army hospital corps, to reinforce
Lord Chelmsford.
New York, Feb. 11. A dispatch
from the Star and Herald of Panama,
says that a serious revolution has
broken out in Antioquai.
Liverpool, Feb. 11. Striking la
borers have appointed a deputation to
learn the views of the Steamship
Owners Association, but the deputa
tion is prohibited from making any
compromise. Not a single vessel
sailed from Liverpool for foreign ports
on Monday. Several hundred sailors
have formed a union. The number
cf strikers of all classes now here is
estimated at frBfm 50,000 to G0,000.
St. Petersrurg, Feb. 11. Gen.
Louis Melikoff has proposed to the
governors of Astrakhan, Samari and
Saratoff that all paper money circulat
ing be exchanged for new, through the
Kama Volga bank, and destroyed.
The attention of medical authorities is
concentrated on Selitreno and neigh
boring districts. The St. Petersburg
sanitary committee proposes to cleanse
the canal and organize large hospitals
which can be anchored in the Gulf of
Bosnia.
