A letter from the American expedition to Mex ico asserts that success of an interna tional railrod connecting the United States and Mexico must depend large ly upon the friendly co-operation with the Mexicans, and doubt if they will consent to an arrangement by which the Yankees can absolutely control their destinies through trade. The prospects of much local Mexican trade is very poor. Washington. Feb. 8. Certain London editors do not seem to fraternize with the utmost affection, Thus the Whitehall Review, upon the death of the Prince Alice, said in rather a stately way: "It is our mourn ful duty to convey to the Queen the respectful and sincere condolence of that section of the community more intimately connected with the Court and its surroundings than any other portion of Her Majesty's subjects." Upon this, the London World news paper, rising up savagely, iays that the proprietor of the Whitehall Review is an egg merchant, named Peacock, of the firm of Merdin & Pea cock, Wells street; that the editor is an ex-reporter of the Morning Post, and w:is formerly the sub-editor of a third-rate country newspaper. And he wants to know, does this sub acidulous critic, "how this tradesman and his young man are more intimately connected with the Court and its sur- rourdings than any- other portionof Her Majesty's subjects" unless mark the line irony! "the one pur veys the butter for the royal house hold, and the other the paper in which the butter is wrapped!" And so, with a withering allusion to "rampant idiocy and sickening dunkeydom," he leaves this pin sticking in the side of a contempoary and a brother. MISCELLANEOUS. OP1LES.
