The Commercial raner of
Portland says the Oregonian en
ters upon its 19th volume " in an
enraged form." It has been ap
pearing in that form ever since
Scott was kicked out of. the custom-house,
as he happened to lite
in the editorial sanctum of the
then, to him, much despised Old
granny.
A New York dispatch of the 5th
says:
Rev. Sheldon Jackson lectured
3'esterday on Alaska before the ladies
of the Presbyterian-board of missions,
urging the establishment of a woman's
home at Fort Wrangel and asking
$3,500; 1,000 was subscribed.
This looks a little singular, to say
the least. Do they intend to banish
women from America by sending them
to a "home" established at Wrangel
by the board of missions? What sort
ci an idea is this?
"Come now," said a lady recent
ly to Alexander Dumas, "who gave
you the right to judge us poor
women as cruelly as you do?" "No
one gave it to me, madame," said
Dumas; "1 bought it."
"Speaking of razors," said the
obsequious barber, as he tendered
change for a quarter, "1 believe
Adam and Eve were the first
raisers, were they not?" The cus
tomer replied, "Apparently."
