Oil City, Pa., Feb. 6. Capt. Paul
Boynton commenced his swim be
tween here and Pittsburg, a distance
of 150 miles, at II o'clock this morn
ing. He expects to reach Kittanning
to-night, and Pittsburg to-morrow
night. The river shows a tempera
ture of one degree below the freezing
point, and is running nearly clear of
ice.
Washington, Feb. G. The navy
department gives no credence to a
Boston rumor of the foundering of the
steamer Richmond, and believes the 1
-vessel will reach Gibraltar at the ex
pected time.
New York, Feb. C. Surrogate
Coffin, at White Plains, in this state, j
yesterday denied the application of j
Jackson & Co., for an order for the
sale of Beu Holladay's farm in West- j
Chester county, to satisfy a claim for
$1,700. The present value of the
farm is about $130,000. less than half
its valuation a few years ago.
An effort will be made by Pacific
coast senators to secure an early re
port on the house bill restricting
Chinese immigration, or to obtain a
discharge from further consideration
of the committee on foreign relations,
to which the measure was referred.
Washington, Feb. 6. On motion
of Edmunds, the senate took up house
joint resolution proposing an amend
ment to the constitution prohibiting
the payment of the claims of disloyal
persons for property injured or des
troyed in the late war of the rebellion,
so that it would be unfinished busi
ness to-morrow.

St. Peterskueg, Feb. 6. The jour

action, it is declared,1-! inspired by
hostility to Russia, and a desire to

THE BANK COMMISSIONERS
SCORED BY THE ODD FEL
LOWS DIRECTORS.
San Francisco, Feb. 6. The su
preme court rendered its decision yes
terday in the case of Wells, Fargo &
Co. 'a bank vs. the state bank com
missioners. That it was intended to
give the commissioners power to su
pervise the affairs of all commercial
banks.
The stockholders of the Odd Fel-
' lows' bank voted unanimously to put
the bank into liquidation. In the
course of the meeting the bank com
missioners were severely scored for
' their conduct in connection with the
affairs of the bank.

The "Mystery" is explained now. It
willberemembered that The Astorian
in common with nearly every other pa
per in the land, recently published
notice of a wonderful new paper, to be
known as the Penn Yan Mystery, to
be published by Leon and Harriet
Lewis, both of whom had been writers
of note on the New York Ledger . an d
kindred periodicals. Harriet has been
dead about a 3Tear, but that was not to
make any difference, as she had kindly
consented to perform her portion of the
editorial duties from the spirit world.
Lewis claimed that he was in hourly
communion with her, and their rela
tions had been scarcely disturbed by
her trip over the Styx. However,
there was a blooming 16-year-old niece
of the defunct Mrs. Lewis in the family,
and a short time ago, afer issuing one
copy of the Mystery and securing some
200,000 in subscription, besides run
ning in debt to the tune of $50,000 in
Penn Yan, the naughty Leon and the
blooming niece skipped out for Europe.
The mystery does not appear to consist
so much in the fact that he preferred a
16-year flesh and blood bride, to a dis
embodied spirit, as to the idea that so
many victims could be found in the
country who assisted pecuniarly in
bringing about the result.
The old Snranac launch, which,
while she belonged to the government
and was propelled by two powerful
little engines, was perhaps the fastest
launch in the United States navy, is
now in use on Puget-sound as a potato
packet. She is 7 tons register. She
has often made sixteen miles per hour,
and it is stated would have buried
herself if pushed to a greater extent.
She is not near so fast now, as when
she wore a brass-buttoned commander
and Uncle Sam paid the bills, but still
she makes about six miles an hour
with ease.
