1. That wo look with prido aiid satisfaction
upon tho peaceful and prosperous condition of
our country as tho natural- result of tho appli
cation of tho principles controlling tho Repub
lican party to tho administration of National
affairs; and that wo reaffirm the principles of
the party as horctoforo enunciated in its Con
ventions, and declare that their practical en
forcement is essential to tho welfare of tho
country, and tho maintenance of tho rights and
liberties of tho people;
i. That tho Cbiof Executive ef tho Nation
has our unabated and unqualified confidence,
in his integrity, ahilfty, and enlightened patri
otism, in the administration of tho duties of
his high offico.
H. That we pornt tho discordant and chaotic
political elements which oppose the Republican
party to-day, to tho grand advances made by
our Government irrits political standing, finan
cial crodit, commercial importance, and tho
material development of tho resources of tho
whole country, as tho direct, natural and inev
itable result of tho enlightened policy and
principles of the Republican party.
1. That wo denounce tho recent Act of Con
gress known as tho Back 1'ay Bill, and tho vot
ing for, or recoivfng increasod pay for servicer
already render od.
o. That wto donounco all Crodit Mobilicr
transactions, whatever their form, and we
heartily approve of tho action of tho lato Con
gress in oxposrng and punishing official cor
ruption. (5. That wo- favor retrenchment and roform
and rigid economy in tho oxpendituro of tho
public money In tho State and National ad
ministration, and tho reduction of taxation as
rapidly as consistent with good government
and tho maintenance of tho public credit
7. That wo cordially welcome to our shores
the oppressed of all countries, and remember
ing that our adopted fellow ckkons have al
ways provoM loyal to tho flag of tho Bopablic.
wo demand for them tho fullest protection of
the laws, and favor increased facilities for nat
uralization; but we condemn the coolio trade,
and all forms of involuntary servitude, and
affirm that tho safety and perpetuity of free
institutions demand inoro stringent laws to
prevent such traffic. "
8. That tho intorcsts of this State demand,
aid its commercial relations with tho other
Mates of tho Union, both present and prospec
tive, will warrant, a liberal expenditure on tho
part of our National Government in the im
provement of our harbors and river channels,
aid it is truo policy of our peoplo that they
hould bo so represented in Congress as shall
t i3 most offectually accomplish this result.
JJ. That tho truo economy of the management
of tho public lands of tho United States, as well
as tho settlement of our vast domain and the
development of its resources, demand liberal
g "ants of public land to aid in the construction
of railroads and other public works, with such
limitations and restrictions as will secure their
ultimato salo to actual settlers.
10. That wo are in favor of Congressional
grants of tho Public lands to aid in the con
struction of a railroad from Portland, Oregon,
t ) some point of junction with the Central or
Union Pacific Railroads in Salt Lake valley;
of a railroad from tho Rogue Rivor valley to a
junction with the Central Pacific in the Hum
boldt valley, and tho oxtension of the Oregon
and California Railroad to connect with tho
California and Oregon railroad, tho completion
of the Orogon Central Railroad to Astoria :
to aid in the building a canal and locks around
the Cascades and Dalles of the Columbia river
and that we are in favor of an appropriation
hy Congress lor tuo survey ana examination
thereof.
il. That tho interests of commerce demand
-the constrction of a breakwater at Port Orford
in this State, and an appropriation by Congress
fvr that purpose,
12. That tho protection of tho commerce of
tho Columbia river demands the placing of a
steam revenue cutter, with all necessary appli
ances, at tho mouth of said river.
1't. That tho producirg, commercial and in
d i-trial interests of the country should have
t ie bist and cheapest modes of transportation
i-os-iblo; and while capital invested in such
moans ot transit should nave a reasonable re
muneration, those interests should bo fully pro
tected, and the facilities fir transportation
should be adjusted, so far a possible, to the
wants of every part of tho State, with no un-jii-t
discrimination as to any section, person or
clas; and that us capital and labor aro inscp
a ably connected, and mutually dcpendant,tho
r sources of tho State will bo best developed,
and tee best intorcsts of all classes promoted,
by mutual concessions and accommodations
b itweon the producer and tho carrier.
11. That we are opposed to the setting apart
of tho W illowa valley for an Indian reserva
tion, and tho candidate of this convention is
hereby pledged to use his influence to secure
t) white settlers tho lands in said valley; that
fie Modoc murderers of cituens on Lost river
and Tub lako, in November last, should at
ones bo delivered to the civil authorities of
t as Stato, so that thoy may bo dealt with ac
cording to law; that wo aro in favor of a hu
