w x ES2SSR3E 9B35S3 Tri-Weekly Astorian TUESDAY August 12, 1873 AX AFFXICTED VILLI.AGE. The Ravages -of tlie Cholera in Mount Veron, Southern TfirH&-a, The Mount. Vernon, Ind., corres pondent of the Louisville Journal July 16th, furnishes this: To'give you some idea of the ruin that has followed close upon the heels of this " Demon of the Ganges." I will cite a few of the more prominent families that it has vibited. In a family named Bell, two are left alive out of seven persons; in one named Hovey, relations of General Ho vey, two died; in that of Shelden, four deaths in that of the "Woodeys, proprietors of the foundry, the utmost havoc was made. One of the proprietors died with it; in his brother's family, a wife and two children "were buried, and so great was the excite ment and fright that I- am told the hus band had to prepare the "bodies for the tomb. In their father's family all but two were buried. These are individual cases. But I failed to find a single person who had not had cholera symptoms more or less violent in their effects. Every house is pervaded with the odors of disinfectants; every person smells of asafoetida and camphor; cherub-looking children give out this nauseating smell from their gar ments. Certainly it wojAld seem that everything possible has been done to stay the disease. 'Bosin, pine tar and coal were burned by order of the board of Health, so that one could feel the heat all over the place, but in spite of all prevent atives and science, for ten days the plague carried off its victims. Prom my room at midnight, I could hear the noise of fun erals. Tou cannot understand to what extremities the citizens and families have been driven. Medical aid was insufficient. The doctors could not be at all places at all times, and many have died who might have been saved had it been possible to have treated them the instant the dis ease came upon them. Yet the phyi cianshave alf acted heroically, with a sin gle exception, whose leaving with his fam ily has excited a storm of indignation. But up till to-day he had "worked hard. For ten days the doctor had scarcely any rest, and been busy in going from house to house, for every dwelling almost had its cholera patients. Scarcely a business house was open to-day; the streets were deserted, the banks closed, and the depot thronged with citizens fleeing for their lives from the city. I think at least 700 persons have left to-day alone. People living in the lower land, or flats, and who have been unable to leave, have removed to store rooms and warehouses, where they are living, and hoping to escape the disease. New cases were reported to-day but the general belief is that the disease has reached its height; at least the symp toms of the new patients are reported as less violent and much milder than those of two days ago. One single fact remains o be cited, and that is, there is seemingly no reason for this infliction of the pestilence. The town has had the reputation of being as healthy as Evans ville, and one of the most healthy in Southern Indiana. The adjoining tracts are not awampy, and the bluff on -which a part of tho city is built is the highest between Evansville and Cairo. Some attribute it to the use of well-water; but every house has a cistern, from "which the water for cooking and drinking is ob tained; and the water of wells was prob ably used less even than in other places. The trial of the Chinese conspira tors Hip Yee Tong Co. who are ar raigned on a charge of extorting $S50 as the price of a Chinese "woman from another Chinaman, is exciting very considerable attention in San Pran cisco. Ir. Lobshi, of 'the Chi nese mission school was called upon to interpret the records of the Chi nese company before the jury. The dispatch says: "He translated several, but when he came to the record of sales of women and punishment in flicted on themfor disobedience to their owners anolthe edicts of the so ciety he got frightened and refused to proceed. The court told him he must translate all or h2 would be punished for contempt, and gave him till Monday to consider the matter. Mr. Loomis is to aid him in the trans lation. All records have on the hack the words, "United hands of justice.' The Chinaman against whom he conspiracy was raised still fears the vengeance of Hip Yee Tong, and will not go out of the Mission House alone. He says he fears that the same so ciety failing to harm him here, will, unless he pays their demand, wreak vengence on his .relatives in China, lle.testified. that when brought be fore the tribuimlr boutthirty men were present, xwiuHone'gcooa xu me door wiih a pistol -drawn to prevent mQF CLARKE, HENDERSON & COOK.
