Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge Adult Services Librarian Siuslaw Public Library (541) 997-3134 Book review “The Woman in Cabin 10” by Ruth Ware For readers who enjoy sus- penseful thrillers such as “The Girl on the Train” or “Gone Girl,” we now have “The Woman in Cabin 10,” by Ruth Ware, the author of the previous bestseller “In a Dark, Dark Wood.” In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise ship, the Aurora, where Lo begins her voyage in the pic- turesque North Sea. At first, her stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo has what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers and crew members remain accounted for — and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has hap- pened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that some- thing (or someone) has gone ter- ribly, terribly wrong. With surprising twists, spine- tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claus- trophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read with “The Woman in Cabin 10,” — one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned. Mapleton branch The Mapleton library is locat- ed at 88148 Riverview Avenue, in the Lion’s Club Building. With a nice view of the Siuslaw River, it’s a wonderful, warm place to sit and enjoy a good book or read the newspa- per. The library also has books, magazines, DVDs and videos, recorded books, Internet com- puters, wireless Internet access, a rotating art display, and more. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.. How providing your email address helps There are certain advantages if you have an email address and provide that address to the library. First, when you are expecting to receive a book 5 A that’s been on hold for you, you will immediately be notified when available — you don’t have to wait for the mail and you help save the library postage. How great is that? Next, you will get an email three days before your materials are due, alerting you to either renew the checkout or return the items. Also, you can receive overdue notices by email. And finally, if you fail to renew your library account, which is required each year, you’ll get an email a month after it expires reminding you to renew. The accounts need to be renewed so that we have an opportunity to update any changes to address, email or contact information. If not renewed, your account will ultimately be dropped off the library system in 18-months. And by providing your email address the library saves on postage! So, be sure to provide your email address, for some great advantages. For more information on upcoming events or to find out how to volunteer at the library, please call 541-997-3134.
