When the top wrestlers in the state take to the mats at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland on Feb. 24 and 25, among the names being called out over the echoing loudspeakers will be four members of Siuslaw’s wrestling team. Richard Huff, a junior seeded at No. 1 in the state 4A’s 113-pound bracket, along with seniors Kainan Lane (285 lbs.) and Nick Steinman (170 lbs.), and sophomore Riley Jennings (152 lbs.) will have the chance to compete for a state title in each of their weight divi- sions. Members of the group earned state qualification during last week- end’s Special District 3 wrestling tour- nament at South Umpqua High School, where the top five finishers in each weight class advanced to state. The Siuslaw girls basket- ball team will wrap up its season at home this Friday following a tough loss on the road at Brookings-Harbor last Friday. For the Bruins (11-10, 3- 5), it was a chance to help secure a post-season appear- ance, which they did with a decisive 68-25 win. For the Lady Viks, it was their sev- enth-straight loss during a hard-fought season. Against the Bruins, Siuslaw got 4 points each from Alyssa Richards, Madison Reynolds and Destinie Tatum. Reynolds, along with Mia Collins, had 6 rebounds. Juniors Kyle King and Jake Hickson, along with senior point guard Brogan Cornish, combined for 32 points against the Bruins. Off the boards, junior Jared Brandt nabbed 13 rebounds, 10 off the defensive glass, and contributed 6 assists.
