New bench memorial for former WLAD manager
Members of Western Lane
Ambulance District (WLAD)
recently thanked the support-
ers who donated towards the
purchase of a special memori-
al bench in remembrance and
honor of former WLAD dis-
trict manager Henry Hanf.
The memorial bench was
the idea of Hanf, according to
senior paramedic and supervi-
sor David Rossi.
“Two weeks before he died,
Henry said the only thing he
wanted was a concrete bench
in memory of him,” Rossi
said.
The bench was a combina-
tion of concrete and recycla-
ble items and constructed by
Hayneedle Inc., a company
located on the East Coast.
“I think it was a great idea
because it’s where he sat a lot,
and we would gather around
and talk to him there,” Rossi
said.

The new Henry Hanf Memorial Bench was recently installed to honor the former
Western Lane Ambulance district manager.
It was also a place where
Hanf would allow for some
stress relief and conduct some
district business.
“The bench became a rec-
ognizable part of his manage-
ment and dedication to
Western Lane Ambulance
District,” said current district
manager Brian Burright. “It
was a place where he would
contemplate decisions for the
betterment of the district.”
After Hanf passed away,
numerous members of the
community asked what they
could do, and were informed
of Hanf’s wishes regarding
the bench. The community
worked in conjunction with
the ambulance district and the
International Association of
Firefighters Local 851, which
is the union representing the
WLAD EMTs and para-
medics.
“A lot of people wanted to
do something for Henry and
they were able to contribute
financially to make this hap-
pen,” Burright added.
On the bench are memorial
plaques that illustrate Hanf’s
professional life and his dedi-
cation to public service.
The plaques include his
service in the 1st U.S. Marine
Corps Division, as chief of
Harrisburg Fire Department,
his work at the Oregon State
Fire Marshal’s Office, and
his time as Western lane
Ambulance’s district manag-
er.
Members of the community
who wish to come visit the
bench and reflect on its mean-
ing and memories, are wel-
come to do so.
