Library’s annual demARTS aims to inspire today
www.shoppelocal.biz
On Saturday, Oct. 10, the
Siuslaw Public Library will
present the second annual
demARTS event in celebration
of
National
Arts
and
Humanities Month.
This day-long demonstration
of creativity and art includes
something for anyone who
enjoys art, creates art or wants
to create art.
More than 20 artists will
demonstrate techniques in
painting, drawing, fiber arts,
beading, fabric arts and ceram-
ics.
The Last Resort Players will
also be on hand in the lobby,
performing a preview from its
upcoming
production
of
“Chicago,” and representing
the performing arts.
The first 100 visitors to the
demARTS
program
will
receive a special gift, and door
prizes will also be given out
through the day.
Mary
Colgan-Bennetts,
library circulation supervisor
and creator of the demARTS
program, is enthusiastic about
the event.
“Last year’s demARTS was
so successful and fun that we
are doing a bigger and better
event this year,” said Colgan-
Bennetts. “We had over 125
people enjoying a day of arts
and this year there will be some
returning artists, as well as
some new faces and art forms.”
One of the artists who partic-
ipated in the inaugural
demARTS, Tina Shoys, said of
last year’s event, “It was appar-
ent that both the artists and the
public were enjoying them-
selves.”
Beginning at 10 a.m.,
demARTS will feature three
groups of six artists sharing
their artistic talent for two
hours each. These demonstra-
tions will allow participants to
observe more than 20 artists
and crafters working in a vari-
ety of mediums.
Anyone who has longed to
turn a blank canvas into a mas-
terpiece or is interested in
learning what inspires artists
may want to attend one or more
demonstrations by artists
sharing their talent in oils,
watercolors, beading, pottery,
altered art and many more
media.
Consider stopping by to see
artists make monoprints, create
a piece of jewelry or turn sim-
ple paper into a work of part.
Fiber artists and admirers
will want to spend time in the
library’s lobby between 10 a.m.
and 4:30 p.m. to see the Fiber
Arts Guild display weaving,
spinning, felting and sewing.
New this year, attendees will
have the opportunity to make
and take their own art.
The library’s conference
room will be open to anyone

who wants to color, create a
card or doodle artistically.
The demARTS event is the
perfect opportunity for adults
and children alike to watch and
participate in the creative
process, speak with local artists
as they work and admire the
talent we have right here in
Florence.
This day-long salute to the
arts and humanities is conduct-
ed in partnership with the

Committee, Friends of the

Arts Alliance (FRAA), the

Central Lincoln sponsors food drive
October is national Public
Power Month, highlighting the
value of community-owned
utilities throughout the United
States.
Community-owned utilities,
which are often referred to as
“public power,” are often cred-
ited with the electrification of
rural America.
In honor of Public Power
Month, Central Lincoln PUD
is holding a food drive for both
Florence Food Share and
Mapleton Food Share. Both
nonprofits distribute needed
food to families and seniors
suffering from lack of employ-
ment, medical costs, and other
difficult life circumstances.
“Our employees discussed
ways to especially support the
communities we serve during
Public Power Month, and felt
that donating food and collect-
ing food donations for people
in need was an excellent way
to help out,” said general man-
ager Debra Smith. “As unem-
ployment on the coast tends to
climb in the winter, we knew
assistance with food would
meet real needs.”
Pantry organizers say foods
that are especially helpful
include: peanut butter, maca-
roni and cheese, canned meat
products (like stew or chili),
flour, coffee, baby formula,
Rice-a-Roni, Hamburger Help-
er, canned fruit, canned soups
(except tomato), canned veg-
etables and canned beans, such
as great northern beans, lima
beans, pinto beans, baked
beans and pork and beans.
Those wishing to donate
these and other canned and
other nonperishable foods to
feed the hungry are encouraged
to bring donations to Central
Lincoln’s office in Florence, at
966 Highway 101, anytime
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday.
Central Lincoln is also spon-
soring a Public Power Month
“Know My Central Lincoln”
contest for customers. Those
who answer seven or more of
11 questions correctly on entry
forms will be entered in a
drawing for an iPad mini.
Customers can enter the
contest at www.clpud.org/ipad-
drawing, or entry forms can be
found in Central Lincoln
billing envelopes during the
month of October.
The drawing will be held in
the Florence office early in
November.
The
Central
Lincoln
People’s Utility District is
Oregon’s second-largest public
power utility, serving some
700 square miles and approxi-
mately 55,000 people in por-
tions of Coos, Douglas, Lane
and Lincoln counties.
Central Lincoln is not-for-
Florence Area Beaders group,
the Florence Miniature Club,
BeauxArts Fine Art Materials
and Kenneth B. Gallery.
