Lacer said that the library’s
summer reading program is
one of her favorite parts about
living in Florence.
“Where I used to live, we
never had an adult summer
reading program. Now I get to
be involved and get a program
too!” she said.
Like last year, the main fea-
ture at the children’s reading
finale was a bright green
waterslide, complete with
wading pools, three slides,
sprinklers and a ballpit.
When they weren’t in the
water, children could get their
faces painted by Spencer.
Although the heat exceeded
95 degrees in Mapleton, it
“was lovely,” Spencer said.
“It is always so nice to
enjoy a sunny afternoon next
to the river,” she said.
Children could also play on
scooter boards, blow bubbles,
draw with chalk and pose for a
“superhero” picture on a cus-
tom backdrop.
“It’s a great time,” Waiss
said.

several past members, and sev-
eral times a year, community
artists participate in month long
invitational events.”
More than 30 artists
entered the gallery’s recent
About Face show.
Backstreet Gallery is open
10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday to
Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to
8 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
