Aquarium to
host Flippers,
Fins Fun Run
NEWPORT — Wild ani-
mals are a centerpiece of vis-
itor experience at the Oregon
Coast Aquarium.
The morning of May 16,
however, humans will take
center stage as they compete
in the Flippers, Feathers and
Fins 5K and Kids’ Dash.
Runners and walkers of all
ages are invited to flock to
Newport for the annual
event, now in its third year.
The scenic route winds
through the aquarium and
along the Yaquina Bay estu-
ary where racers will be
greeted with facts about
native wildlife.
The 5K is open to runners
and walkers 10 years and
older. The closed-course 1K
Kids’ Dash race is perfect for
aspiring little athletes ages
two to nine years old. Parents
are invited to accompany
their children on this run
through the aquarium’s
grounds.
Flippers, Feathers and Fins
5K aand Kids’ Dash partici-
pants will receive an official
finisher medal, post-race
refreshments and free admis-
sion to the aquarium for the
day.
Race entry is $35 for the
5K, and $20 for the Kids’
Dash. A $5 early registration
discount is available through
May 3.

The rainbow trout stock-
ing program is in full
swing and most water bod-
ies have been stocked
recently or will be soon
again. Most areas will be
stocked multiple times
until early June. Be sure to
check out the 2015 stock-
ing schedule for the most
up to date information.
Fishing for the various
warm water fish species
can be productive during
the spring months as lake
temperatures start to rise
and fish begin spawning.
Anglers will start finding
more fish up in the shal-
lows over the next month.

Ten teams were on hand for
Siuslaw’s annual Central Coast
Invitational, which included Far West
League rivals North Bend and
Sutherlin. Viking junior Mikaela Siegel
had a standout day, placing in four
events for Siuslaw to help nudge out
North Bend for the team title, 162-140.
Siegel won both the 100-meter hur-
dles (16.70) and long jump (16-00.25),
and placed second in the triple jump
(31-10) and 300-meter hurdles (49.63).
The Lady Viks got multiple wins on
the day, including the 4x400-meter
relay with splits from sophomore
Destinie Tatum, junior Sierra Potter,
freshman Kaylee Graham and senior
Kennedy Pendergrass in 4:27.63.
In the shot put, junior Magdalena
Akeson threw the winning mark at 31-
10, followed closely by sophomore
Carissa Oliver in second (31-08).
Oliver went on to win the discus with a
throw of 110-08, and placed third in the
javelin (93-04).
Siuslaw also nabbed a handful of
second-place marks, with Tatum finish-
ing the 400 meters in 1:03.21 and leap-
ing 4-06 in the high jump. Potter was
second in the 1500-meter race
Viking junior Mikaela Siegel leaps for

won the long jump with a mark of 16-

(5:11.98), and senior Stevie Miller
finished the 100-meter hurdles in
17:37 for second place.
Sophomore Abby Watkins was
fourth in the 100-meter dash
(13.93); Tatum was fourth in the
200 meters (28.85); sophomore
Elyssa Rose was fourth in the
triple jump (30-06); and Graham
was fourth in the 300-meter hur-
dles (52.71).
Philomath was third overall
(100), followed by Sutherlin (64),
Myrtle Point (45), Roseburg (37),
Bandon (30), Taft (28), Toledo
(23) and Powers (9).
For the boys’ team, senior Joe
Dotson had a pair of wins, starting
with the javelin (158-04). Dotson
also won the 300-meter hurdles
(40.14)
Senior Seth Campbell ran
2:08.48 in the 800 meters for the
win, and freshman Trent Reavis
won the shot put with a throw of
44-06.5.
The Viks also got scoring from
senior Billy Jones, who was sec-
ond in the long jump (20-02.75)
and third in the triple jump (39-
01.0); junior Tyler Williams,
fourth in the 400 meters (55.66);
sophomore Jack Pickell broke the
10-minute mark for fourth in the
3,000 meters (9:53.47); and senior
Nicholas Dodson, was fifth in the
