SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2015 Oregon Dunes Chapter DAR installs new member Debbie Whittaker was wel- comed as a new member of Oregon Dunes Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution at its March 27 meeting. “My family’s history has been a favorite hobby of mine for more than 40 years,” said Whittaker. “Genealogy is much more than the dates and places of birth, marriage, death and burial. It’s the stories about how they lived, what they held dear and how their personal values played critical roles in their lives. “Through my research and publication, I want to honor these ancestors and preserve the stories about our family's history and sacrifices for future generations. I look forward to participating in the programs and functions of the DAR par- ticularly as they relate to pre- serving our country’s history.” Whittaker’s fourth great- grandfather, Philip Swigert, served during the Revolutionary War under two captains. Initially he mustered as a Private for Captain Martin Weaver Nov. 5, 1777, and then mustered again Oct. 1, 1780, as a private in Captain Bowman’s Company, the 6th of the 1st class, 5th Battalion, Lancaster Co., Pa., Militia. The couple had no less than 10 children with most living to maturity. The many genera- tions of descendants of this fine man were very patriotic and always answered the call of duty when the country faced times of war. These descen- dants can be found in the rolls of the War of 1812 and Civil War up to and including current encounters. Daughters of the American Revolution is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. DAR was established in Oregon in 1896. The Oregon Dunes chapter has been active in Florence since it was organ- ized in 2008. The chapter spon- sored a NSDAR Special Projects Grant for the Remembrance Garden at the soon to be opened Oregon Coast Military Museum. As a non-political, lineage organization, its mission is to promote historic preservation through four Oregon museums, long list of non-profit organi- zations in the area. The keynote speaker this year is First Citizen Cindy Wobbe and light hors d’oeu- vres will be served. The event is sponsored by the Three Rivers Foundation. Individual tickets are $7 and may be purchased in advance from an FACC board member or at Siuslaw Outreach Services, 1576 W. 12th St. Table sponsorships can be purchased for $100 by contact- ing David Wiegan at 541-997- 2816.
