SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 Chamber’s First Friday returns to Old Town Florence First Friday returns to the streets of historic Old Town Florence starting Friday, March 6. Produced by the Old Town Committee for the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, it is an effort to encourage businesses in Old Town and the Antiques District to com- mit to remaining open until 8 p.m. the first Friday of each month. “Come to Historic Old Town and Antiques District to see what is happening on the street,” committee co-chair- Library Tidings woman Jenna Bartlett said. “It could be wine tasting, special discounts or listening to some music while shopping. “Whether you are celebrat- ing TGIF or doing a little shopping after dinner, you will find it all here.” Co-chairwoman Glenna Martin said, “We also want extended hours for our locals who may find parking more difficult during the day.” Decorative window signs will identify those businesses who are committed to the effort. Library Tidings by Kevin Mittge ‘The Right Word: Roget and his Thesaurus’ By Jen Bryant Illustrated by Melissa Sweet Book Review by Susie Voth In 1787, when Peter Roget (pronounced roh-zhay) was just eight years old, he began his first notebook. He called it “Peter, Mark, Roget. His Book.” In it he wrote lists and from the lists he learned that words are powerful things and to use just the right word felt wonderful. Roget’s Thesaurus is a house- hold staple, like a cookbook, only for words. We’ve all used them to write English papers, to find the perfect word of love to send in a card to one we adore, to convey our sorrow at the death of a friend or loved one. We trade in a 5-cent word for a $5 word and it is easy because Peter Mark Roget spent his life- time infatuated with words and lists of words “The Right Word: Roget and his Thesaurus” has been nomi- nated for and/or won many pres- tigious awards. The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award for most distinguished informational book for children is one of the awards received. “The Right Word: Roget and his Thesaurus” is also a Caldecott Honor Book for 2015. Melissa Sweet, the illustrator, used only word and lists found either in Roget’s notebooks or the first edition of Roget’s 1852 Thesaurus in the artwork for this book. She was able to use Roget’s original 1805 word book for her research. This fabulous book is not just for children. People of all ages will find much to appreciate within its pages. It is more than a nice book; it is excellent, splendid, grand, stunning, and top-notch. ‘Owyhee River Journals’ with Bonnie Olin Oregon author Bonnie Olin will present and discuss her new book, “The Owyhee River Journals,” at a program on Tuesday, March 3, at 1 p.m. Join fellow adventurers in this vicarious journey through the spectacular and peaceful Owyhee River basin area of eastern Oregon. Olin began exploring the Owyhee River area in the early 1990s with her soon-to-be hus- band, Mike Quigley. The cou- ple’s initial exploration led to many more trips down the unde- veloped, pristine Owyhee River 5 A and through its striking canyons. These journeys are the subject of “The Owyhee River Journals.” The book includes photos of rarely seen landscapes taken by Mike Quigley during the adventuresome duo’s many journeys together. Bonnie Olin will discuss their floats down the river, hikes through the canyons, and what impact these adventures had on her life Free tax services The most common question we’re getting at the library at this time of year is: Do you offer help with taxes? The library doesn’t, but AARP does in the library’s Bromley Room. The AARP tax service is available on Monday and Thursdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m, and runs through April 13. This tax service is particular- ly important this year as the IRS, for the first time, will not be providing instruction booklets, just the three basic 1040 forms, which have not yet arrived at the library. Oregon has not provided tax instruction booklets or forms to libraries for some years. Radio personality to speak at next DAR meeting *Valid for new patients only. Call for details.
