10 A SIUSLAW NEWS ❚ WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2015 New library program helps get children ‘Ready to Read’ Three generations of faith Learning to read begins before children start school. Young children need to devel- op important language and lit- eracy skills before they can actually learn to read. The Siuslaw Public Library, in partnership with Lane Early Learning Alliance, United Way of Lane County and with finan- cial support from an Early Literacy grant from the Oregon Department of Education through the Early Learning Division and Early Learning Council, is offering a free childcare provider/preschool teacher training on Saturday Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Bromley Room The workshop will demon- strate how caregivers can use five familiar and easy-to-use practices to develop language and other early literacy skills in children from birth to age five. The Every Child Ready to Read workshop explains why the skills are so important, demonstrates how to help chil- dren learn the skills, provides titles of high-interest books that are age appropriate, and sends participants home with early literacy activities they can incorporate into their work setting. Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library was developed by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA), divisions of the American Library Association, in conjunction with national reading and edu- cation experts, and offers research-based practices that adults and children can enjoy together while helping children learn early literacy or pre-read- ing skills. The practices are talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Certificates of attendance are available at the workshop through Family Connections of Lane and Douglas County. For more information about the upcoming Every Child Ready to Read workshop, as well as other materials and resources for parents and care- givers, contact Youth Services Librarian Gayle Waiss at 541- 997-3132. Mother Georgia placed ashes on the head of grandmother Mavis while mother Kathy wrote a prayer request, and daughter Clara stood by after having already received ashes. It was an amazing chance to connect with some wonderful people on an entirely different level than one normally does on Bay Street near Siuslaw Harbor in Florence. www.spiceinfl orence.com Global & Northwest Fusion Cuisine SEAFOOD & GOURMET BURGERS • Wednesday - Burger & Brew $8.50 Lamb, Beef or Chicken • Thursday - $4 Margaritas - $2.50 Tacos Join us for a great NEW MENU!
