In his speech at Chicago, Sat
nrday, Burke Cockran said "The
Filipinos never did anything ex
cept to aid ns on the field of bat
tle with their alliance." If Mr.
Cockran has any data showing
where the Filipinos ever aided
us on the field of battle ho should
produce it, for history is pain
fully silent on this subject.
When Dewey destroyed the
Spanish fleet at Manila, there
was no Filipino organization,
for Aguinaldo had sold whatever
existed of it, and was then at
Hong Kong. When the Ameri
can land forces took Manila,
August 13th 1898, the Filipinas
took no part in the engagement.
In its report the Philippine com
mission says:
'When the City oi Manila
was taken, Aug. 13, the Fili
pinos took no part in the attack,
but came following in with a
view to looting the city and
were only prevented from doing
so by our forces preventing them
from entering. Aguinaldo claim
ed that he had the right to occu
py the city. He demanded of
General Merritt the palace of
Malacanan for himself and the
session of all the churohes of
Manila, also that a part of the
money taken from the Spaniards
as spoils of war should be given
up, and, above all, that he should
be given the arms of the Span
ish prisoners. All these demands
were refused. ' '
Mr. Cockran is aware that the
Filipinos gave us no material as
sistance, so he undertakes to save
himself by implying that we
were greatly aided by their moral
support. "With their alliance."
ho says, they aided us. But there
was no alliance. Generals Mer
ritt, Greene and Anderson, who
were ia command at the begin
ning of our occupation and until
the surrender of Manila, state
that there was no alliance with
the insurgents and no promise to
them of independence.
THERE ARE OTHERS.
There is a laudable effort be
ing made by the iarmers resid
ing along the road leading from
Corvallis to Monroe, to have
certain portions of that road,
which have been recently plowed
and graded, covered with gravel.
This matter is of almost as much
importance to the business men
of Corvallis as it is to their
patrons the farmers. With good
roads the farmer finds the value
of his land increased, and the
labor of hauling his products to
town made easier. The mer
chant finds that the people of
the surrounding country will
trade at that city whioh is most
accessible, other things being
equal. Therefore, all roads lead
ing to Corvallis should be kept
in the best possible condition,
and while the proposition to im
prove the road to Monroe is be
fore us, let us not forget that
there is a much-traveled road
leading from Philomath, a por
tion ot which needs immediate
attention.
A prominent farmer, whose
property adjoins this road, said
to a Gazette man Saturday:
"A portion of this Corvallis
Philomath road is in crying need
of gravel. The stretch from this
city to the hill near the orchard
of D. C. Rose will be almost im
passible this winter unless some
thing is done. There is time
yet to gravel it. The balance
ot the road could ba left until a
later date, but there is a couple
of miles that should be graveled ,
at once,"
Sexto Lopez, formerly secretary
and confidante of General Agui
unldo, arrived in New York, Sim
day. Mr. Lopez says his mission
to the United States is to tell the
people here what the Filipinos
want.' Supposing Mr. Lopez
should tell the people that he
didn't want Bryan's jvotector-
ite? Mr. Bryan lias never ssked
he consent of the Filipinos.
Favorable Meation.
The O A C was well repre
sented at the State Fair recently
closed at Salem, and the Pacific
Homestead has the following to
say of the Agricultural College
exhibit at the Fair:
"The Oregon State Agricul
tural College Experiment Sta
tion at Cowallis had a very com
plete and attractive exhibit.
Their showing of miro-organisms
or living germs of diseases affect
ing stock, was worthy of the
the great attention and absorb
ing interest which it received.
The station also showed speci
mens of Oregon insects, winged
and otherwise, and there were
exhibits of samples of seeds, of
grains, grasses, etc., in fact,
practically everything that can
be raised in the soil of Oregon.
There were, besides, specimens
from the industrial department,
showing what is accomplished in
the shops by the students.
"In the dairy department there
was a complete butter making
plant in active operation, under
the direction of Prof. F. L. Kent,
of the Corvallis Experiment Sta
tion. There was a fine display
of butter, cheese, churns, cream
separators, milk testers, etc.
"That department attracted as
muoh attention as any other on
the grounds, and the exhibit as
a whole was one of the most
complete at the Fair, showing
the lively interest thab has been
awakened in this branch of agri
culture throughout Oregon and
the whole Pacific Northwest."

arrivals Wednesdav evening,
These gentlemen are energetic
and responsible business men
and represent considerable oapi
tal. The first-named was for
merly sheriff of Fillmore oounty,
Minn., the second is a member
of the state senate, while the
third represents a real estate,
loan and insurance company.
They were met at Albany by O.
O. Krogstad, who will accom
pany them on a tour of inspec
tion over the Coe lands, which
have been mentioned in these
columns several times during
the past tew months. The gen
tlemen are looking for business
investments and, if satisfied with
the result of their investigation,
will provide the above-mentioned
lands with substantial
occupatts. There is reason to
believe their visit will result in
much rood to Lincoln county.
