S a l e m , J u l y 1 4 ,1 8 6 8 . T o the Uitionist i-'-In jrour daily issue of thia.date, 1 notice several com munications from sundry persons on railroad matters, and which, as you state, have been publiahed by request. In the commnnioation o f J . W . P Huntington to James W . Nesmith, I am heralded forth as having ^urgently requested Mr. 11. to accompany the party. * . Now, 1 desire to say that Mr. Hunt* ington is very much mistaken in his man. 1 Sever requested or advised Mr. Huntington, or any other person to visit M f. Nesmith on business connect ed with railroads, or for any other pur pose. 1 was not advised, nor consulted iu any shape, way or manner concern* ing the visit. In fact, 1 never knew that Mr. Huntington had fortaed one o f the party, until advised by his own commnuieatiou. Inasmuch as the other correspond ence has been made public by request, I hope yon will do me the justice to correct the statement therein made, by publishing this n.te. Yours respectfully, T- M c f . P a t t o n . a CARD. I read Mr. T. M cF. Patton’s card in the Unionist o f the 16th inst. It ia alike false in detail. It is false in spirit and false in letter. It is throughout an ntter falsehood. Pattoo met me in front ot Meyer’s •tore, on the morning o f the day allud ed to. H e then and there urged that I should go te Nesmith’s, with Messrs. Flint, Elliott and others. I had been previously requested to do so, by other rsone, but domestio reasons, which itton fully understood, made it very in • convenient for me to leave town on that day. I finally agreed to go, mainly up on his persuasion. H e (Patton) stood at Hirsch’s corner when the party (which included Messrs. Elliott, Flint, Parish, Loryea, Henderson and m yself) got in to the carriage«. H e saw and recog nised ms among the number ; he knew that I went, and he knew f o r what purpose I went. 1 am not mistaken in my man. J. W Pr.BIT neNTINOTON. S a l e m , July 17th, 1868. W e do know, however, that ever since the Radicals have had control iu Portland, they were very careful, as a general fact, to employ none except the “ trooly loll.” Every Democrat was proscribed, no matter how well qualified in other re spects. And this is true o f almost every locality in the United States where the Radicals were in the ascend ancy. And not only so. but maoy o f the teachers thus employed, regularly taught Radical dogmas to the scholars, one half o f whom were the children of Democratic parents. W e know of many instances where Democrats, as serting their manhood, refused to tame ly submit to such outrages, and took their children from school, and hired teachers who confined themselves to their legitimate duties.
