A2 Obituaries/Community wallowa.com December 23, 2015 Wallowa County Chieftain O BITUARIES Fern M. Strickler Oct. 31, 2015 Longtime Enterprise and Joseph resident Fern M. Strickler died Oct.31, 2015, at the Brookdale Se- nior Living Community in College Place, Wash. Me- morial graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Mon- day, Dec. 28, at the Enter- prise Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Enterprise Cemetery Fund or to the Wallowa County Museum through the Munselle-Rhodes Fu- neral Home, 902 S. Main St, Milton-Freewater, Ore. To leave a condolence online visit; www.mun- sellerhodes.com Fern was born at the family home near the “S” curve west of Enterprise. She was the daughter of Charles and Lena Mal- zer Emmons. She said the doctor was summoned by horseback but by the time he had hitched his buggy and got there she was helped into the world by an aunt who lived about a mile away. Fern continued to live at home through her school years in Enter- prise and worked at the variety store. On July 7, 1940, she married Ben Strickler and they moved to the farm on Upper Prairie Creek. Friends said the farming venture would not last. A variety store clerk and a gasoline distributor just couldn’t farm. For 32 years they successfully farmed and raised a family. In 1972 they retired from the farm and moved to Joseph. Fern continued her interest in farming by growing a garage and patio full of begonias, geraniums and fuchsias. She kept Ben busy making pots to put them in. Ben passed away in 1987 and she continued to garden and travel. Fern was a lifetime Wallowa County resident until 2006, when declining health forced her into assisted living in College Place to be closer to family and doctors. Fern always marveled at the advances in technology during her lifetime — born into a home without electricity, running water, plumbing or telephone to today’s world of plenty. She saw the coming of the automobile, airplane, television, space travel, man on the moon and a cellphone as an everyday ne- cessity. She is survived by her son Tom Strickler of Milton-Free- water; daughter Sally Strickler of College Place; four grand- children and eight great-grandchildren.
