Is Peruna a Laxative? jf
(From Friday's Journal.)
Another burst of strength was
shown in the cattle pens at North
Portland. While the best offerings
available dll not reach above $7.10,
while $7.25 was received in a limit
ed way yesterday for quality, the
price paid today was in fact a dime
better than would have been avail
able for the same stuff yesterday.
There was only a small run of cat
tle for the day, totals being 137 head
compared with 60 head last Friday,
40 a vear ago and 21 head on this
same day two years ago.
Cattle shippers today: Ed Knorr.

was a very heavy run, totals being
1217 bead compared with 392 head
last Friday, 140 a year ago and 37

A very strong tone is showing In
the sheep trade at North Portland. To
day's run was light and buyers took
hold rather eagerly at the advanced
prices noted yesterday.
The only shippers of shee"p to the
local market for the day were Smythe

Hubbard.

S. B. HARTMAN. M. D.
I' am In re
ceipt of a letter
from a mechanic
who is at the
head of a pros
perous house
hold. Peruna has
been used In his
family for a good
many years. He
writes as fol
lows: "As you know,
we have used
Peruna In our
home for a num
er of years. We
find it a reliable
household medi
cine In catarrhal
conditions, coughs, colds and
grip, and many other aliments to
which the family Is subject But since
the change in the formula of Peruna
I do not find it quite as useful to my
self. My bowels are naturally very
active. I cannot take a cathartic of
any sort. It does me Injury to do so.
The old Poruna contained no cathartic
ingredient und was therefore a very
useful medicine to me. But I notice
that the new Peruna has a slight lax
ative action, which almost makes it
prohibitory for me to use. I was won
dering if there was not some way in
which I could obtain the old Peruna as
you used to make It"
To this letter I made the following
reply: "Yes, the new Peruna does
contain a laxative element You
should therefore take the old Peruna
(Ka-tar-no) which has no laxative
quality. While prescribing the
old Peruna I found It quite
necessary frequently to prescribe the
laxative Manalln in connection with It
Therefore Manalln was combined with
Peruna, in order to meet those cases
that require a laxative. But In case no
laxative is required the objection to
the new Peruna you speak of
arises. Many of the people
who used to take the old Peruna found
difficulty In taking the new Peruna
To meet those cases I am having man
ufactured the old Peruna under the
name of Katarno, and If you are
anxious to get the old Peruna exactly
as it used to be made you can do so."
PERUNA IS FOR SALE AT ALL
DRUG STORES.
SPECIAL NOTICE Many persons
are making Inquiries for the old
time Peruna. To such would say,
this formula is now DUt out under the
name of KA-TAR-NO, manufactured

Glasgow, Dec. 7. Hundreds of or
ganized students of Glasgow univer
sity went to the headquarters of the
Woman's Social and Political union
and completely wrecked the offices.
The attack was the outcome of suf
fragette interruptions at the Installa
tion of Augustine Byrell, chief secre
tary for Ireland, as lord rector of
Glasgow university.
Wild scenes followed the wrecking
operations, finally culminating in a
street riot, which was subdued only
by the police. After smashing in the
front windows of the women's head
quarters with stones, the students
rushed in, disregarding the cries of
"Cowards!" from the three women
left in charge of the place. They
demolished the interior and destroy
ed everything they could lay their
hands upon.
