matter whether we like it or not. and

combinations of capital have come to
lay. They have become the warp
and woof of our industrial life and It
is up to us to quit wasting our time
railing at them, and by using our wits
turn them to good account.
"I am a firm believer In govern
ment ownership of all public utilities
and all public monopolies. Not,
however, until the people, through In
vestigation and experience are equip
ped to properly administer their af
fairs.
"Federal control Is the first and
greatest slop In this direction,
through federal and state control of
railroads, especially since the pas
sage of the Hepbur.t act In 1906, tne
people are becom.ng familiar with
the affairs of the railroads of the
country. They have learned more
about the management of railroads
in the past 10 ye: than they ever
learned before. It r.as been a cam
paign of education, and the people
are preparing themselves for tho day
of government ownership. In the
mean time they are seeing rebates and
discriminations prohibited, rates re
duced and service Improved.

ty prisoners working in a stone quar
ry on the outskirts of Kansas City,
Kan., mutinied, and after a revolver
fight with their guards two of them
escaped. Only two guards were on
duty. A negro prisoner suddenly
springing upon Owan Williams, the
guard stationed at the mouth of the
quarry, gave the signal for the mu
tiny, Williams was severely beaten and
his revolver taken from him. After
an exchange of a dozen shots X. A.
Thompson, the other guard, overcame
all the prisoners except two negrles,
who escaped Into the woods.

Instead of citron, however, the trees
are bearing seedless lemons. The
original bud came from Italy.

Ford and his trade as a carriage
painter applied for work at the ranch
of Messrs Hays nnd Ashworth.
He proved himself a good employee
and when his employers went to fc.ng
land upon a visit Ford was left in
charge of everything including the
sales of wood, fruit, hay, hogs and
any other salable products of the
ranch. On their return they found
that Mr. Trustworthy had departed
a few days ' previous for another
clime, It is alleged, with all the re
ceipts of the ranch during their ab
sence, which were far in excess of
wages due him.
The farmers are now completing
their fall sowing after being delayed
bv the continued dry weather.

lied relatives In here Saturday.

W. O. Hays and Joe Ashworth re
turned last week from an extended
visit to their old home in England.
Miss Violet Ashworth, sister of the
latter came back with them to make
America her future home. They were
highly pleased with their trip and
en route visited many points of in
terest in the United States.

Dye, 75 years old, won her suit for
divorce from Colonel Dye, 70 years
old, a veteran of" the' Civil war and
member of the Old Guard, when a
jury brought In its verdict In the case
beforo Justice Rrcenbaum in the Su
preme Court. The jury Was out
about an hour.
Colonel Dye admitted on the wit
ness stand today that it was nt tho
suggestion of hLi wife that he went
to New Jersey with her and married
her In 1S67. He testified that they
hud been living together for several
years nfter Mrs. Dye's first husband
William II. Duke Hurst, had obtained
a divorce from her, naming Dye as co
respondent.
