I-macs Dllinrgwl the Entire Force Except Commissary Clerk George M. Core-. 1 Club Saloon T. W. MURRELL, Proprietor. Cor. Court and Cottonwood, PEXDLETOX - . OREGON. Today no .tracklaylng crew has been at work extending the line of the Umatilla Central towards the goal at Pilot Rock. The reason lies In the fact that there Is -now no tracklaylng crew and thereby hangs a ale of Interest. From the account that has reached the city from the O. R. & N. com pany's camp at the mouth of Birch creek It seems that for some time past the workmen have been dissatis fied with the particularly variety of food provided at the company's men" tent. Although the Birch creek camp Is an Ideal one In location and the com missary Is under the careful manage ment of George Carey, late of the Pullman dining car service, the menu has not been satisfactory to the toll ers, who have been placing the ties and the steel upon the branch line. Yesterday afternoon, so the story goes, the bickerings among the men became so discordant that with one fell blow John D. Isaacs, who Is In charge of the work, discharged the entire crew, foreman, cook and all. Consequently but two men are now left In the construction department of the, Umatilla Central. They are Mr. Isaacs himself and the genial com missary man, who was upheld by his superintendent. This morning the entire crew of discharged workmen came to Pen dleton for the purpose of securing their pay preparatory to leaving for other fields of labor. They were paid off and It Is understood a new .gang Is being enlisted In Portland. H. A. Brandon, assistant engineer, under whose management falls the work on the Umatilla Central and other projects In the inland empire, .as In Portland at the time of tho crisis ot the Birch creek camp. Since then he has been notified of the sit uation and It 'is presumed will arrive soon for the purpose of restoring har mony and causing operations to be resumed once more. It is said that following the dis charge of the tracklaylng crew last evening the men became threatening In their attitude and thdt during the evening Mr. Carey sat in his tent un der arms, fearing that the commis sary might be attacked. However, no violence occurred and this afternoon tho camp Is silent and deserted by all save the two men aforementioned. logical finds recorded In custom Ore gon was made this week by Bert fumpbell at the home of his mother, Mrs. Hose Campbell, north of . the river. , The specimen consists of a round lava rock the size of the crown of a hat, on the inside of which was en cased a perfect shell about four Inches across, every rib and lino of which was deeply Imprinted In the solid rock. A fire had been started In the back yard of the Campbell home for tho purpose of burning up a pile of trash, and this rock, together with others of the same size and appearance, was In the trash pile. When It became heat ed it burst Into two sections, exposing the beautiful lineaments of tho shell which had perhaps been sealed. In Its secret chambers for thousands of years. . The rock Is common lava and It Is the opinion of those versed In geolo gy and who have seen the rock, that the shell was encased In the molten lava In some prehistoric eruption In the Blue mountains ami has been rolling about since that time. The specimen will be sent by Mr. Camp bell to the (Oregon Historical society or to the museum of the University ot Oregon. Brown to Ills Home In Sxikane Famous Hounds Were Center of Attraction Here Till Forenoon Have Perforated Some Excellent Service In Hunting Criminal. Harry Draper and his famous blood hounds, were In Pendleton this morn and and aroused much interest among those who saw them. Draper was here upon his return to Spokane from Baker City, where he had t.iken his dogs to track the murderers of Har vey K. Brown. He arrived here on Xo. 5 last night and this morning took the northbound train at 11:45. The bloodhounds were given quar ters In the city Jail during the morn ing and Marshal Gurdane, who had the animals In charge while Draper sleet, was kept busy during the morn ing showing the dogs to Interested admirers. Afterwards Draper had the dogs for a time in the recorder's office nnd while there the animals were a center of attraction. The Draper bloodhounds are not of the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" variety of canines. Instead they are mild-mannered, friendly looking dogs. Both are brown in color and have long ears. When they were placed In the Jail this morning each dog at once commenced beating a swift trail around the room as though he had struck a red hot scent. However, the only inmate at the time was a soli tary drunk and the hunt, If such It was, proved fruitless. The dogs were locked In the little cell of the city Jail and while there were secure from any attempt at poisoning. This fact apparently rec ompensed them for the humility of being thrown Into Jail. They showed an eager Interest In all cailers. In the past the Draper hounds have performed some valuable service In tracking criminals. One of the. best pieces of work they accomplished was the trailing of the murderer Smith who killed so many men In Clacka mas county and was finally found nnd killed by the posse hunting him.
