The commission appointed under the treaty concluded Inst .January between Great Britnln and the United States to settle, If pos sible, tbo long-standing dispute over tlits Alaskan boundary, met this morn ing at tho British foreign office and formally organized. Those present Included tho throe British contmts sloners Lord Alverstono, Sir Louis .lotto (lleutonant governor of Qui; boo), and Mr. A. B. Aylosworth, K. C. and tho threo American commis sioners Secretary Root, Senator Lodge and Senator Turner. In addi tion thore was present a preat array of counsel to present the two sides of the case. The question at issue wiw not entered Into today, tho initial session being devoted to tho work of organization and the exchange of courtesies. 20,000 Square Miles in Dispute, Tho Alaskan boundary dispute is ono of long Btnndlng. binco 1S72 Canada has been cnlllng attention to the question year after yotr. In 1S!)8 a joint high commission of Rng- Hsb and American representatives tried to settle the quarrel, but failed. Tho territory In dispute covers an area of upwards of 20.000 square miles. For the most part It Is moun tainous, but it Includes val'inhl" gold mines. The quarrel r-nlerfi around tho question of the whereabouts of the boundary between Alaska and Canada. Originally. Alaska was Rus sian territory. In 1S25 the boundary lino was defined, on paper, by n treaty between rtussia and Groat Brit ain. In ISfiT the United States bought Alaska from tho czar, and then the Canadian-Alaskan frontier bognn to bo peopled. As the boundary line tlxed by the 1S25 treaty hnd never been properly surveyed, disputes arose between Cannda nnd the new owners of Alaska. Throughout almost Its entire length the disputed territory adjoins Brit ish Columbia on Its westward side. The remaining portion in dispute ad joins the famous Yukon territory, and Includes tho eastern boundary of the const strip from the vicinity of Ynkutat bar to tho 141st meridian. So far as tho latter is concerned tho ownership of towns like Skagway and Dyea famous in tho great Klon dike gold rush is in question. The Klondike, Indeed, Is directly nffecteu by the quarrel which it Is now hoped will bo settled. Tho Ingress and egress to this area aro by way of tbo 1 ynn canal. Tho Americans claim that this canal, plus a belt of terri tory 30 miles cast of it, belongs to the United States; while Canada de mands that a great portion of the up per part of the canal, togother wltn a slice of territory to the east, bo recognized ns port of the Dominion.
