They are here : the days when the sun rises an hour behind time in the morning, gives the earth a few hours ot indifferent staring, a listless glance with out any warmth in it. and-then rolls him self up ia his cloud-blankets and goes to bed before any one is ready to bid him good-night. These are tlse days when cats coll up in corners of fences and tops of sheds, to lie in the sunshine, while rats and mice take a holiday ; the days when the shady side of the street is the side to be shunned ; the days when stoves are be ing put up and sun shades taken down the days when the skies are like the eves of a corpictte bine and calm and beaiiti , f il, but deceitful : the days when you roll grudgingly out of bed an hour later than usual and grumble because vou were called so soon and at night you curl up between the chilly sheets with a sneeze in lieu of a prayer ; the days when it is too warm to keep & fire and too cold to do without- one ; the days when a " chest pro tector ' is a bosom friend, and a linen coat is a thing to be sneezed at ; the davs when the shadows grow long early, and the wind that rustles the frightened Jeares at twi light whispers mockingly of the still sum mer evenings that are gone, and mutters hoarsely of the long winter nights that are coining, and crows mysteriously over half hinted deeds ot its own doing of an'Tr waves and drowning men. and wrecks far out at sea.'' Tbeso are the days when that same treacherous wind loves to take you unawares, to spring upon vou from around corners, to swoop 'down at you from high roots, and snatch voor hat. tVnm your head and bear it off down the street m triumph ; the davs when tlm leaves waisper together on the trees debating whether it would not be better to lie in that broad baud of sunshine on the grass than to shiver any lontrer on their sl.'iti in th chill winds. These a:-, the 1a that remind us of years gou by of ' things done and things left undone." which, ordered otherwise, would have nmde Life's autumn all Indian summer. As an indication q the work performed, v;o refer to the r.ew steam saw mill, put un by the contractors h this countv. near the place ot Judge . T Mattock. ' The site is in a dense forest of. timber, and the mil! began operations on the 7th inst., just four weeks lrom the time the timber was pur chased. When the site was selected the mill was on board cf a ship en rede. It was landed, and by the aid of twenty loams, furnished by the Portland lrav and Hack Company, was placed upon the ground in one day. This valley alone' has all the ele ments of an Empire as extensive as Eng land herself. Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan. Ohio and Pennsylvania are7 States, they cast an immense Electoral "V ote; to say nothing of the popular vote, but what are they all, compared with Ore gon? Only populated. They have no such climate ; no mineral to compare with ours ; no grain such as we produce ; and as tor wool they are sending out to Ore gon, we understand, to get a taste of what we have hi that line : as we have been feeding them on Oregon flour. The pros pects for higher prices on grain are of a verv doubtful nature. Wool next year will command good round prices, for the reason that local consumption at the West is increasing every year, and the mills throughout the country now rely almost exclusively on the domestic article. In the New England States there is more ma chinery now in operation than for some' years : the large importations of foreign wool and woolens attracted to the country by the injudicious changes of the tariff some lime ago, have been consumed ; the Government has sold out the surplus gar ments on hand at the close of the war. and American manufacturers have almost a clear field. The iulluenco cf our' highly protective tariff must be felt the ensuing year, and prices of American wool must come up to near the cost of importing sim ilar grades of foreign production.
