The White A sewing machine
agent says of the White: Don't for
grt that I am selling the be-t Sewing
Machine iu the market. It outsells
i ho Singer, Howe, or any other ma
chine. 1 can sell five White's where
I don't sell cue Singer. Howe, Weed,
Davis' or any other machine manufact
ured. The reason is because the White
is the best machine in the market to
day. Remember that it is a new ma
chine, and cannot be ni'ide over as the
old companies are now doing with the
Singer, Howe, Wed, and various otlu-r
machines. They are daily working
thfin orer, and the agents are selling
them to the public for new ones, and
they can afford to sell them at any
price.
The White is made adjustable, has a
double st?el feed, self threading shut
lo, noiseless, light-running, also beauti
fully finished, and has rollers on the
tn.iehine for moving it about. The
machine was patented in 187G, and is
warranted for three years.
It is with pleasure that we call the at
tention of our readers to the new ad
vertisements in to-day's paper. Lau
ra nee & Shearer are determine-! to let
the people know that they are doing a
large business and can and do fell
cheap. Jules LeBrette also resorts to
'printer's ink" as a sensible way t' let
people know that he, too, has a large
and well st-lected stock of goods.
Read all of the advertisements.
Smoke. On Tuesday, Inst the cry
of fire was shouted throu'gh the streets
of our quiet city, and for a few mo
ments everything was excitement. It
was found that a house in Chinatown,
on lower street, occupied by the Du
Prei Dramatic Company was blazing
pretty lively. Being on the bank of
the creek the fire was put out before
the flames 'spread, thereby hindering
what might have been s hugh fire
Babbitt Metal. We have about
100 pounds of the best kind of babbitt
metal which we will sell for 40 cts. per
pound, if iold soon. We intend soon
to send for some new tvpe amd cannot
do so until we dispose of this babbitt
metal. Mill, men wili please take
notice.
Called. We received a pleasant
call from Mrs. Joe Hilton and her two
sisters, Misses Marian and Alma Luce,
on last Monday eveniog. They also
brought us a bucket of fine cherries as
a present from their mother. Mrs.
Luce has our thanks for thus remem
bering the printer.
The two Mr. Johnsons, blacksmiths
of Prairie City, called on us last Tues
day and informed us that they have
erected a shop in the above town, and
that we might look for an advertise
ment from them soon.
The News is three months old to-day.
Freight Business. Wehave taken
the pains to go to a majority of the bus
iness men in this city and ascertain as
near as possible the number of pounds
of freight they recived during the year,
and in the aggregate have the following
amount: 1,024.291 add to the above
70,000 received by the John Day town
business men, 830,000 to the Chinese
here pnd at lowertown 400,000 for the 1
Prairie City folks, 90,000 for Robison
ville, Susanville and Spanish Gulch and
200,000 for Stevens and Snider, at
Harney, and we have received in this
county during the year 2,214,291 lbs.
of freight and say nothing of Camp
Harney Post nor Malheur Agency,
winch would add at least 300,000 more.
Kam Wau Chung, of John Day town,
paid to the O. S. N. Co., last month, a
few dollars over $400 for river trans
portation. They are perhaps the heav
iest shippers in this Valley.
Was It Indians? A few weeks
ago while one of our freighters was
going up Birch creek hill, a friend of
his who was ahead turned his horse
and rode back meeting the freight man
upon the steepest pitch on the hill and
told him that Indians were ahead,
whereupon the teamster turned his
ten horse team aod three wagons and
made stage time down said hill. Af
ter arriving at the house he found out
it was only a band of cattle. The ques
tion is who turned the team on the
hill, the man, cattle or Indians?

Avoid Them. Never quarrel or t
temp to reason with a man full of gin
or lager, unless you oourt the risk of
being grossly insulted Avoid them.
It's an old proverb, that if you lie
down with dogs, you are liable to get
up with fleas. A drunken man will
boastfully say what he pleases, or what
the fermentation within him dictates,
regardless of truth, courtesy, or even of
common decency, while the sober par
ty will take much, say little, yet feels
an insult, nevertheless, but strenously
endeavors to avoiJ difficulties. Some
men know more in a minute, in their
own conceit when drunk, than in a
week when sober. Of course a perfect
gentlemen, drunk o sober, is never an
objectionable companion, but there is
as much difference between a born gen
tlemen and a manufactured one, as
there is between a Maltese cat and an
American pole cat
At Home. Mr. Phil. Metschanand

Several parties have gone to Bear
Valley to hunt and fish.
Mr. N. Dun lap, of Columbia coun
ty, Ohio, made a call at this office last
Monday. He was on his way to the
Dalles, Oregon, to look after the in
terests of the mail route from Baker
via Canyon City to the Dalles, in
which he is interested. This was his
first trip through our Territory, and
he was verv anxious to obtain informa
tion in regard to our valleys and other
resources. Boise Democrat.
