PAGE SIX. THE MORNING ASTORIAN, THURSDAY, MARCH 17, 1901. LINES MUST BE CHANGED Present Harbor Restrictions Work Serious Hardships on Astor ia's Shipping Interests. CHAMBER TAKES UP MATTER Alteration 1 s Needed Prom Smith Point to Tongue and Gov ernment Officials Will HeJ2 , Asked for Belief. The matter of the alteration of the harbor lines along the Astoria water front will doubtless soon again be tak en up by the Chamber of Commerce. The existing lines are not at all satis factvy. and it la felt that the govern ment officials should agree to a sult - able change. There Is always more or less prejudice against change of har bor lines, but In Astoria's case the present location of the line is detri mental to the shipping interests of the sort Recently, It will be recalled, the chamber asked that the harbor lines In the eastern portion of the city be altered, and the government officials finally agreed to a change. However, the new lines are practically as bad as the old and the eastern harbor is still shut oft from deep water. This limits the mills there to vessels of small draft and places a serious handicap on these Institutions, one of which, the Hume mill, would, If It had access to ample depth, load many large vessels. Now complaint is made that the low er harbor lines are not properly locat ed, and there is a determination on the part of wharf owners and others di rectly interested to have them extend ed north. At many of the docks there Is not more than 20 feet of water at low tide, which is altogether too little to accommodate the demands of ship ping. A the last meeting of the cham-t-r thp n atter was discussed at length, 1 nt i jvt no definite action has been S-V- n. ftt is likely those-persons most interest .;J will press the proposal, with tV 'a view of securing relocation of ihd , r -sent lines from Tongue point to K ','!! point , Alter! 8J3 who have long studied har- t -f-r co: nations believe that the lines vhcuIJ l' extended and all wharf, own ers rejuiid to build out to the lines.
