Mistress Tabby had in the third floor of the house her little family of seven kittens. Their ex istence was unknown to anyone prior to tho conflagration and probably would have remained so until the little ones had gained sufficient strength and courage to strike out In life on their own responsibility. While the flames were eating their way through tho dry roof of tho house tho mother cat was seen com ing out of tho back door; her vel vety feet trod cautiously over the various articles of furniture which had been strewn around In tho ex citement of the moment and she waded through tho pools of water that most hated of elements to the cat family as if she had been on dry ground. In her mouth, held by the nap of the neck was a little kit ten whose eyes were not yet open to tho light of tho world, and whom she carried tenderly as sho quickly mado her way to a placo of safety. Reaching a spot In the shadow of tho next house away from prying eyes this wise old mother cat de posited her tiny burden and sped with lightning speed back to the burning dwelling. Three times was she seen to make the trip and each time was there carried another mem ber of her family to the new homo. After the third trip tho hungry flames ate their way around her former home and the old mother cat was unable to longer carry on her work of rescue. She watched and waited however and when tho wa ter had at last subdued the flames she picked her way back to tho spot and returning carried tho corpse of a little kitten. Tha remaining four had been drowned by the deluge of water. The old mother however car ried the dead and placed them with tho live and when discovered was tenderly wasting upon the little In- g Wants Buttons? - 10 cents 1 Gildedrand Mission Picture Frames, only AT YOUR PRICE.
