UKICK IIUILDIXG.
Marshfield has entered Into the
"brick building era, and this presages
much, for it Is from the different
phases of construction work that the
growth and development of cities
js Indicated. The wrecking of the
framo building that now obstruct the
future site of the three-story brick
"building that Is to be constructed on
the corner of Broadway and First
streets will not bo regretted. They
have stood for many years a monu
ment to the days when Marshfield
and Coos Bay were in the making.
The replacing of them by brick build
ings marks a hugh stride forward,
the importance of which cannot be
reckoned too deeply. Brick and
stono buildings give to a city a sub
stantial, prosperous air not otherwise
attained. When the Flannigan and
Bennett pressed brick fronti three
story building replaces the present
frai-ie ones on Front and A streets
and the two-story brick building on
Broadway and C stects the city v. in
take on a metopolitan air that will
go far toward i:n. roojlr.i; vi:..-
favorably.

In another column today The Ore
gonlan prints an article on the ef
forts of Coos Bay citizens to proven:
land-,rant magnates from dodging
the terms by which they and treir
predecessors obtained free la.'ds f-T-r
the Government and under which
"any ono person" la entitled to buy
tracts up tu 1G0 acres at ?2.50 an
acre. As in'; the ca3o of the railroad
land grants 'pf tre Oregon Central
(West Side) and the Oregon & Coli
fornia, trat was ono of tre stipula
tions exacted by Congress. It Is well
known that Congress would not have
put tho lands Into tno control either
of railroad or or the State of Oregon,
for transfer to the wagon road com
pany, without that limitation on the
power of sale.
The history of the Coos Bay wagon
road grant is a record of perfidy to
tlio Government and the peoplo from
first to last. The wagon road was
not properly built nor maintained,
nor with honest regard for the
pledges made by tho wagon-road
company, In obtaining tho lands. It
was constructed In a wretched man
ner, and for a largo part of the year
long lengths of thiivo been impas
sable, Tlio Coos Bay grant probably Is
marked by no wore infamy than the
wagon-road grants from lOugene, Al
buuy and The Dalles to tho eastern
line of tho State, or from Corvallis
to Yauulnn. Kach company built
and kept up u pretended road, simply
in order to grab the land bonus from
tlKjAuibllu domain. Ench of them
htm- blighted the regions that It
touched, by barring its lands from
ticttli'iueut.
All that Is spilled milk, however,
and no good wli conii o ' bowuiltni
it. But lu tho caso of tho Coos Bay
liraut there Is tho $2.50 an acre prico
limit, which should bo enforced
against the unsold land. Thoro tiro
lawors declaiming that It Is spilled,
too; buj thoy are paid to say It. A

and Us nubile lands committee that
tho corporation powers, which smoth

Senators looked on, mado away with
the Malarkoy and Cliaso bills also.
