Docs the adage. "Competition Is tho
life of trades" still hold good? Is
Coos county fighting Mr. Harrlman
when helping in the development of
Oregon whose resources have been
only touched by railroad building
and In face of the fact that the rail
roads now built are unable to handle
the trflc? AV111 not an ellectric line
from Roseburg, open up a new and
resourseful section that will prove
a feeder to the Hairiman rail and
steamship lines?
The Drain road will not open up
tho rich agricultural and timbered
section between Roseburg and Myrtle
Point. Nor people these districts. Tho
added wealth, populatolon and devel
opment that will invarltibly result
fiom the building of such a line will
bo n help to Harrlman rather than
a hlnderance and will not draw from
his millions needed in the building
of other lines in Oregon.
The business that naturally be
longs to his water grade from Drain
to Coos Bay will naturally follow
that course and will not snea ovui
a mountain lange to satisfy a sant
lment for patronising iu plectric
line Besides the tonnage that will
natuially flow to Roseburg and C003
Bay over such a line, will add to
the business of Harrlman's rail road
and water tonnage.
What has been tho result of rail
load building In tho past; even the
effect paralllng other lines? The
building of tho Gieat Not thwestern

ing the Northern Pnclflc at Several
points In Its course, by tho influence

added to tho freight and passenger

N. P. from Spokane to Cour d. Alene
Lake although the roads run through
a narrow valley side by side, tho
building of the electric rail road
from Spogane to Coeur d. Alene city
increased the business of the N. P.
branch the first year by quadrupel
lng the popouatlon of that town, and
adding greatly to Spokane's popu
lation and wealth, Besides doubling
the value of the stock of tho electric
line.
Look at the net work of railroads
in the State of Illinois, yet wc do
jiot hear these competing lines whin
ing about compctlton.yct I doubt not
that for years to come Oregon can
great country of ours, and Oregon
Is a big state which can furnish ton
nage for rail roads faster than they
can be built.
We will say huraah for Harrlman
if he carries out his announced rail
road projects for Oregon, but let us
play our little part in helping the
development of this great state, and
making Coos Bay one of the rich
and Important but-lets of tho Pacific
Coast.s The people of Dougla
County have shown commendable
enterprise in this movement. Shall
we meet him half way, or lag In the
race?
The cutting of the canal between
Isthmus Inlet and the Coquille riv
er may be all right, but this would
not bring ns tho support of the
wealth and good people of Dot' ;lurf
County that would surely resu!' .in
being connected with them bj ..dole
bands. Neither would it likely have
such an Influence in hastening the
the building of the Drain branch. It
might also be more difficult to ac
complish, as such a move would not
interest outside capital as will the
building of an electric railway. Such
a lino with the Influence of build
ing o fthe Drain road make tho in
terest of Douglas and Coos Counties
double their wealth and population
and add greatly to the value of tho
Harrlman belongings.
The impetus it would give to the
rich Coquille valley, In the lino of
development Would compel tho C. B.
R. & E. railroad, now running to
Myrtle Point to increase Its facili
ties, in order to handle the business
and the increase business would en
able It to make more money on low
er rates thus adding wealth to the
farmers and tradesmen along tha
line.
