London, Oct. 29 In a message to the Salvationists, General William Booth pays the following tribute to his daughter, Mrs. Emma Booth-Tucker, who was killed last night in a Santa Fe wreck: "My daughter was, after her mother, the first among the many noble and consecrated women I have known during the fifty years of my public life. Her loss is irrepara ble." To Attend Funeral. "The railways are about to present a united front to the labor unions Already there i3 a move on foot to reduce the pay rolls by 10 per cent." Such was the statement made Sat urday in Chicago by an executive of ficial of a leading Western line. The plan at present does not con template a reduction in wages, it was said, but the working force is to be reduced in evei possible way. That an agreement has been en tered into by the big railway systems was not denied. While there is no formal association, the understanding is said to be definite and binding. he primaiy object is to present a solid front to the labor unions so that employees of the road cannot use another road as a club to bring their own road into subjection. Word has gone forth on all large railroads that retrenchments are to be made in certain lines where the companies can most easily reduce orces, such as car shops, repair shops, maintenance of way, depart ment and improvement corps. The unprofitable trains are to be taken off and fast trains reduced in speed to save fuel. Drain Nonpareils. 3. M.Weatherby T. A. Bury D. L. Martin Roseburg Real Estate Co. A Special from Cot rallis of last Friday's date says: Corvallis is in a state of excitement tonight due to the fact that several local people, who are seemingly almost crazy on religious subjects, have band ed themselves together in an organization known as the "Holy Rollers," and, as a part of their imagined duties, are going through as senseless, follish and absurb antics as were ever preformed by any religious fanatics in this county. The band is lead by 0. V. Hurt, Benton County's members of the Republican State Central Committee and a leading citizen and business man of Coi vallis. The "Holy Rollers' have torn up their sidewalks, have re moved the furniture from their houses and aro even taking the partitions from their dwelling to form a vast bonfire to inform the world of their "complete sanctification." Like their ancestors of cen turies ago they are making burnt offering, but in lieu of extra human beings in their number or the proverbial fatted calf, dogs and cats are compelled to serve as their sacrifices. Two dogs and a cat have been offered up on their imagined "altai and the stench in the neighbor hood of the headquarters of the "Holy Rollers" is almost unbearable. This band of foolish, fallacious fanatics consists of Mr. Hurt and family and Mrs. Hartly and daughters. The organisation of "Holy Rollers' was started in this city by an Easterner who was here a few weeks ago. Mrs. Hunt and some of the children became con verted to the movement but Mr. Hunt did not fully adopt their opinions until Tuesday. He then gave up his position in Kline's store, where he has been a faithful employe for several years, saying he did not need to work as the Lord would now take care of him. Mrs. Hart le)"s son protests against her taking part-in the grotesque ceremonies and is tiding to get her to leave the band. Her husband is away from home and knows nothing about the matter. The headquarters of the "Holy Rollers" and the the ceremonies are being performed is near Fisher's mill skirts of the city. As this is outside the city limits of local officers have no authority to stop the fanatics in actions. The county officers visited them last evening place where on the out Coi rail's the their idiotic and ordered them to quit destroying propeicy, but Mr. Hunt told the authorities that they must obey the will of the Lord, and consequently could rc cognize no earthly power. The officers, however, will put an end to the ridiculous proceeding if offensive or destructive ceremonies con tinue. The "Holy Rollers" derive their name from the supposed fact that when a people become completely sanctified and joins this organization their names are written on a holy roll in Heaven and they are thence forth "Holy Rollers." This is one of the most peculiar organisations ever heard of in Oregon, and so far as is known their strange ceremo nies and sacrifices are unequaled by anything that ever happened in this state for absurdity, foolishness and absolute idiocy. The fanatical antics of these people have attracted great atten tion here aid hundreds of citizens have congregated around the sacrifi cial altar of the "Holy Rollers" today to see furniture, walls and side walks burned up and dogs and cats offered up as burnt offerings. Until he adopted his peculiar religious opinions and affiliated himself with this band Mr. Hunt was considered one of the leading citi zens of Corvallis. He has taken a prominent part in the Republican party of Benton County and has always been know n as an upright, hon est business man. Qlendsle News Notes. Will you kindly inform me if it is advanta geous or permissible to pluck turkeys alive? Is it fitting that at a festival like Thanksgivine the guests at many a table should cijoy (?) eating tortur ed, miserable birds? Hoping for an answer before the horror begins, I am faithfully, "A Startled Observer." (Such dressing of turkeys or poultry is brutal in the extreme and penons doing so should be punished severely. The present manner of bleeding poul try to death ought not to be allowed, either. The only way to kill such stock ia to cut the heads off quickly using a sharp ax, of course. Ed.' We copy the above from the Pacific Homestead and desire to endorse the Editor for we have seen in Oregon turkeys that were picked bare after they were bled and when taken from the picking rope they jumped up and ran around uttering the mournful notes cheep! cheep! cheep! Tho boys laugh ed at the brutality, a brutality as brutal as that of a Comanche Indian when he made a fire en the stomach of a pale face. Such work only fits the boys or persons engaging in it for a position in the penitentiary. R.
