Filling 0110 of these, ho smoked until it
was empty, broke itiu twain and throw
tho fragments into a box prepared for
their rvception. Then he took another
pipe from its straw or -wooden inelo
surr, filled it and datroyed it, as before.
For years Professor Huxley, liko Charles
Lamb, toiled after tobacco 'as somo men
after virtue. ' At a certain debato on
smoking ho told tho story of his early
struggles in away which utterly pnt tho
cntitobaccouists to confusion.
" "For 40 years of my life,' ho said,
'tobacco had been a deadly poison to
rac. Loud cheers from tho antitobac
conits. In my youth, ns a medical
student, I tried to smoke. In vain 1 At
every fresh attempt my insidious foo
stretched 1110 prostrato on the floor. Re
peated cheers. I eutervd tho navy.
Again I tried to smoke and again met
with defeat. I hated tobacco. I could al
most have lent my support to nny Insti
tution that had for its object tho putting
of tobacco smokers to death. Vociferous
cheering.
" 'A few years ago I was In Brittany
with some friends. Wo vrent to an inn,
Tl!eyUgsn to smoke. They looked very
happy, and outside it was very wet and
dismal I thought I would try a cigar.
Murmurs. I did so. Great expecta

was a changed man, and I now feel that
smoking in moderation is 3 comfortable
and laudabl" irr.ctico and is productive
of good. Dismay and confusion of the
antitobacecuists. Roars of Laughter from
the smokers.
' 'There is no more harm in a pipe than
there is in a cup of tea. Yoa may poi
son yourself by drinking too much green
tea or kill yourself by eating too many
beefsteaks. For my own part, I consider
that tobacco in modera: ion is a sweetener
and equalizer of tho temper.' Total
rout of tho antitobccccmists and cora
pleto triumph of the smokers. "
A Cnrioat Fact.
Tho Popular Scicnco News calls atten
tion to a most remarkable ncconnt of tho
position of certain planet. as located in
"Gulliver's Travels." This book, writ-
j tea somewhere about 1720, contains the
following words: "Thev spend the
j greater part of their lives in observing
tho celestial bodies, wnich they do Ijt
tho assistance of glasses far cxlliiig
ours in goodness. They have likevriso
discovered two lesser stars, or satellites,
which revolve about Mars, whereof tie
innermost is distant from the center of
the primary planet exactly threo of his
diameters and tho outermost live. The
former revolves in the space of 10 hours,
and the latter in 21 U, so that tho
squares of their periodical times arc very
nor in tho same proportion with the
cubes of their distance from tho center
of ifara."
One hundred and fifty years before It
was known that Mars had a satellite,
when the theory that it had one would
have been met with ridicale, cr at least
disbelief, tho author of this remarkable
book described the exact number of satel
lites that Mars possessed, told tbir loca
tion and unusual speed; also a peculiar
ity in the relation of thoipeed to tho
central orb, a peculiarity baswl upon no
principles with which astronomers aro
familiar. A careful study cf tho state
ments mado by many writers of marked
ability will almost inevitably lead ns to
the conclusion that certain iic.- -native
minds have tho gift of prophcrv. it, at
all events, there may bo flashes c f divi
nation possibly unsuspected by tho -writers
themselves.
3Ieal Id the Dark Agra.
Few references can be found as to tho
manner in which a meal was served and
eaten during the dark ages. As near as
wo can learn, tho soup was put in a big
bowl with cars, called a "porringer."
There was seldom a spoon for each per
son. Those who had spoons dipped them
into tho porringer, and the liquid was
carried directly to each mouth. Those
who were without spoons drank their
soup from the porringeT, holding it by
one of tho cars, or else borrowed a spoon
of their neighbor.
Th meats were placed in a largo ves
' fn the center of the table. Each per
son present at the meal picked out vith
his fingers such bits as ho desired. Ono
or two knives answered for half a dozen
guests. Those who wero without knifo
borrowed from those who had one. As
a rale, the guests at tablonsed their own
knives. There is no evidence that nap
kins were supplied to guests at this pe
riod. Atanyrate, no mention is mado of
them. Lippincott's.
Disappointed.
Mrs. Wickwirc threw down tho paper
in a way betokening somo irritation.
"What's tho matter, dear?" a.sfcfl Mr.
Wickwirc.
"Oh. nothing."
"Oh, yes, there was something. What
was it?"
"Well, if you mast know, I saw a
line in tho paper silxmt 'Chinese worst
ed,' and it turned out to Imj sometliing
about tliat tiresome war. I thought it
was some new kind of dress goods."
