.- r THE INDEPENDENT. Hillsboro, October 30, 1874. Our xclianges will please di rect their "papers to Hillsboro from this date. Washington In dependent. This week we make the first issue of the "Washington Independent. Wc do not choose this name because it is a large one hut because it has an im portant local application: a much shorter and more humble one would suit our taste better.but business bo fore pleasure, is the motto of the age. We have located our business here because we think it the best place in the county for a newspaper. By hard work and preserverance we hope to make thelNDEPKNDEXT a lirst class country paper. All e ask of the people of this county is to subscribe liberally and we will send them a paper every week that will contain all tho home newsandjbe a welcome messenger to their firesides. AVe shall publish no reading matter that wiil have a tendency to demoralize the youth, nor advertise any business that will in our judgment have an immoral tendency. In politics, the Independent will remain, independent. To farmers living in this county who feel unable to pay in advance, we will send tho Independent, and they may pay at the end of a year from time they subscribe. Just send in your names for the Inde pendent. V'o want an active agent in every precinct in the county. V in ncmucca 11 a ill oat! . Frpm present appsaranccs it will not be long before Oregon will have railway communication with the Eat:t. Tho passage of the AVinnc mucca raiload bill by tho last Legis lature gives it a long shove forward. The distance is short. It is only 275 miles from Eugene City toAYin nemucca. The route is easy com pared with tho difficulties of the Union Pacific. The whole length of road to be built will be, making due allowances for curvature, 335 miles. By this route Portland will bo 150 miles nearer AVinnemucca than 1 y tho Portland and Sacramento route. Ciet your hats and !S bonnets ready, beloved web-feet, for a ride on tho AVinnemuDca railroad at Jtotf-pri'-e to the Centennial Exposition. Too L.aige. The Oregon Legislature is too large, there being GO members In the llouse and 30 in the Senate. The increase of numbers embarrasses the transaction of busiuess. AVith its present numbers lh& session ot the Legislature should be for sixty davs inelead of forty, then an in crease of numbers might be of some advantage. AVith the same repre sentation as Oregon tho State of New York would have 2,000 Repre sentatives and 1,000 Senators. As it would be unsafe to reduce our num ber, of Representation we ought to have a constitutional amendment passed to lengthen tho sessions to CO days. Statu of Sencflors- Of the Senators whose terms expire in 1870, seven are Republi cans: Cornelius, Dolph, Hanna, Hirsh, AVatson, AVcbster and Willi am Four are Democrats: Town send, Myers, Haley and Tolin. Four arc. Independents: Barnes, Bristow, Crystal and Owens. Of tho Senators whoso terms ex pire in 1878, nino are Democrats: Braly, Clark, Cochran, Herrin, Munkers, Offield, Savage, Yan Cleave, and AVisdom: Four arc Re publicans: Engle, Lee, Richardson and Smith. Two are Independents: Goodman, of Linn, and Jewell of Umatilla. FrxY. It is said that Horace Greeley once wrote a note to a broth er editor in New Ycrk who was as wretched a writer as Horace him self. Said editor not being able to read the note sent it back to Hor ace for a translation. Thinking it was an answer to his own note Mr. Greeley tried to read it but failed, and said to the boy: "Go take it back. AVhatdoe3 the damned fool mean?" "Yea sir, said the boy, that is just what hr said. State Fair. The State Fair was a success this.yeav, he receipts ex reeding tho expenditures. Review. The Legislature has ended its work for this year and adjourned. And we are happy to say that there is much to praise and little to con demn in its recoid for the past ses sion. This Legislature was elected on the platform of retrenchment and reform. Ketrenchment and re form were the shibboleth of all three parties. But tho distinctive princi ple which brought the Independent party into existence and which was virtually ignored by tho Independ ent Legislators, was the right of the people to regulate the commerce and conduct of railroads. But wo have no time to pursue this subject now, only we wish to call tho attention of Independent Legislators to the first and most important principle of the parly. The legislation of this session was mainly corrective, and there was many obnoxious measures modified or repealed. The litigant law was repealed. It , had sowo good features in it which it would have been well to have pre served, but it concentrated to much power in the hands of one man and barred com pctetion. The State printing was an immense leak for public money and a prov yion for its future reduction was made. The expenses of the Penitentiary were curtailed. Tho infamous perquisites of tho Treas ury were cut oil. Unwisely wo think the pay of the Secretary oi State was left 2,000 too much. But another session will stop this leak also. The fees of county officers, ia soma coun ties were cut down too low, yat this can be corrected. Under tho previ ous law in eomc of the counties tho fees were simply outrageous. AVc canay to the Legislature heartily, AVeil done. Sei3i? Isa vo:?r r'ami?. j Our subscript ion list is rapidly in I creasing. IIisoflens3 was that of attempting to blackmail persons having busiueis with tho Custom house, and a failure to pay over .51, 000 to tho Government which ho had collected unlawfully. This accords with the history of the man as given by Hon. A. C. Gibbs, in the late campaign, and is in keeping with Mitchell who gave Cair the appointment.
