The Stale Fair.
In consequence of the unfavorable indica
tions of the weather, the attendance on Mon
day was slim, and the prospect for the usual
full display in the various departments was
not at all encouraging. The principal at
traction was a running race, single dash of a
mile, free for all, purse 8100. Captain Jack,
entered by M. S. White; Sleepy Dave, en
tered by Wm. White, and Al Straw, entered
by Wm. Bigham. Race won by Al Straw;
time, 1:55. Immediately after this race the
trotting race, double teams, single dash of
one mile, for a purse of 8250. L B. Lindsey
entered Mystery and Membrino rilot, J. J.
Welsh entered Olympia Dick and Tinsmith.
Won by Welsh's team in 2:57. Total amount
of receipts Monday, S.",767 50.
Tuesday, notwithstanding the unfavorable
appearance of the weather still continued,
there was a steady influx of people and a
Urge increase of articles in the various de
partments placed on exhibition. The open
ing address, by Mr. Wm. Lewellyn, was
plain, practical aud common sense, , and re
plete with valuable hints and suggestioAi
The running race to-day was mile heats, three
in five for a purse of $500. A D. Tlatner
entered Council Bluff, Wm. White entered
Sank Owens, J. N. Crabb entered Sydney
Burbage and John F. Miller entered Bye
Straw. The result was as follows:
Council Pluff 1111
Kyestraw J 1 1
Burbiura J ili.
Hank Jweni 4 dia
lime? 1:95, 1:10 1-1, 1:57 1-2, 1:5 J.
It is charged that there was a foul by the
rider of Council Bluff, and in consequence
there is a great deal of dissatisfaction, aud
the award of the judges is severely criticised.
In noticing this matter the Record says:
In the third heat yesterday between Rye-
straw and Council Bluffs, we witnessed a bit
of foul riding on the part of the "African
jockey" on Council Bluffs, that ought to have
distanced the horse and ruled the rider for
ever off this track. We don't understand
what the judges were doing not to note the
fact It was plain to every one opposite the
horse, in the grand stand. About 20 feet
from the string Council Bluffs lead Ryestraw
about a head. The rider of Council Bluffs,
by a quick jerk of the left rein, threw the
left shoulder of his animal against the right
shoulder of Ryestraw, causing the latter an
imal to swerve into the mud and probably
causing him to lose the heat Mr. R. A. Ir
vine, the Chief Marshal, called the attention
of the judges to the fact and asked them to
examine the tracks after the race, but they
refused to do so. 11 jockeying is to win tho
contests of our State Fair, the sooner the
racing feature of it is given up the better.
Immediately after the running race came
the trotting race, mile heats, best three in
five, for a purse of $250. Alexander Shan
non entered Lady Faustina ; Wnu White en
tered Bellfouuder; L B. Lindsay entered
Blue Mountain Boy, and B. B. Acker entered
Eph Maynard. The result was as follows :

2:38. Receipts for the day, S3.4S9.
Wednesday morning the polls opened at 9

and 8100 to the second ; four entries Olo,

The race was won by Hard Bargain, Olo
second, Al Straw third, Wyannooska dis
tanced. Time-1:57, 2:01. In the trotting
race to-day, mile heats, best three in five,
for a premium of 8250 ; there were two en
tries. J. J. Welsh entered Tinsmith, and
W. Williams entered Bellfounder. The race
was won by Bellfounder in three straight
heats. Time, 3:10, 3:12, 3:11.

Scared. One day this week a tramp who
anocared very feeble, and hobbled along
leaning upon a cane, went to the residence of
St John Skinner. The doors were shut, but

was as feeble as he pretended, St John gave
a large dog, which was lying by the door, the
word, and he started to interview the fellow,

The Savior hath summoned our darlings,
Our dear little children to go,
To that city all shining with silver, '
Far over the hills of snow.
Oh ! hear the sweet voice of the Master,
Oh ! sorrowing hearts be still,
Look up where the tower of jasper
Stands firm on the golden hill
'Tis only the blindness of weeping
That hideth our loved ones' faces,
For shining in raiments of angels,
They smile from their heavenly places.
