    Camels la Nevada.
A oorrcepondent ot the Live Slock
Journal gives some interesting itemi
concerning tho aucccss ot the camel
breeding experiment iu Nevaba. We
quote as follows :
At Ogden we mot eight camels, en
route from their birthplace to the
Zoological Gardens in Philadelphia.
They were ia charge of Mr. Frank J.
Thompson, superintendent of the gar
dons. ' The breeding of camels was begun
in Texas, twenty years ago, by an im
portation of the War Department.
From Texas the camels were taken to
Carson valley, Nevada. , The first im
portation were India camels; the sec
ond were the two-bumped camels of
China. These two varieties cross
well together. The two-humped are
preferable, as they are more docile
and kindly to handle than the single
bumped.
The breeding of the camels ha
been a success, and, as pack Animals,
has been profitable. They subsist
upon the sagebrush and. less de
sirable herbage of this rugged, barren
'region, and attain such size as ia un
iuowo in any other country. They
vere tho largest we ever saw, and
were selected with reference to ship
ping in the cars. The largest 0aes
could not be put into the ordinary
stock cars as used on the ,1'acifio rail
road. The man who owns and broods
tlinm is a Swiss, and wauU to sell-out,
and return to bis native land. Il lie
does not, he intends to remove to Ar
izona with them, for the reason that
camels as pack animals frighten 'the
toams of "freighters' and make trou
ble for him ocolkiua"y. They breed
onco in, two years; and in this lot
there was one cow camel with her
year old calf at ber side, taking bis
dinner liko any other great, saucy

It is a mitiee of worubor and ocm
