Upoothis day the natural and ever present desire of woman to receive a communication through tbe postollice roam Tests itself more strikingly than on ordinary days and her thoughts rua to . "Where can the postman be, I lay; Beought to fly uniucb a day. Of all the diiya in the year, you know IU monstrous rude to be so alow. i . - In England tbe p'iactfee of sending valeri' tines has been ia vogua from time immcmo' rial, but in America its time ouly dates back some thirty or forty years. ; In early days - the preparing of vafontirres -was alliirig of labor as well as or love, for every spooney who wanted to say soft things to the "apple of bis eie" was not a rhymist. 80 In later . years, the making of valentines became a regular business, and to duy "Old Beeswax" who could not write a couplet to save his life can with great propriety appropriate the talent of the professional rhymester got up jn gorgeous stylo. This year the ladies have in addition to tbe blessed privilege of send ing valentines, another. They ara permitted openly and'above board to-do the love mak- ibg, aud may even go so laf us to ask the all ''momentous question which bashful lovers ' bave been for the lust half-dozen years beoo avoidiog. Among some 'old Yorkshire legends we find that "if during Leap Year auy damsel, being a maid, 'shall ask of a ' bachelor his band in marriage, and he (not being previously bespoken) do refuoe the re quest of the suid damsel, then he shall 'be obliged to purchase a robe of fine silk,' which he shall forthwith present to the dieappoiot- ' ed maidon, so that thereby her grief way be assuaged." The penalty incase of failure ' to purchase the gown is not set forth, but there was an eminently fitting provision that ' a young lady was entitled to exact the fine of but one. Otherwise she might fit her 'self out with a sufficient wardrobe to last 'Iber ( a'ripe old age. In the early days when this penalty was made it was not sup- ' posed that a young aily 1 would "pop" the) 1 question uales3 she were really In love, ortha' ' fihe could sincerely love more than one at a time. And in tho90 duys silk dresses were silk dresses, and oo'young lady could be ex pected to have more than one unless the old man had recently 'struck atonaza aud ' it was to be left as 0 legacy to bcr children 'or grand children. There are tnuny ( tradi tiousastoto tbe origin of St. -Valentine's -day, and from among tberu we take the fol lowing as the aiost amii3iugly-touchiDg One of all: . . ! j THR TBOB tHHf.Vb Of ST. Its purposes, to engage ia and carry on a general mercantile business, buying and selling general mercban disc' and produce ; receiving, stofldgandfor warding grain and aM kinds of product and general merchandise, and doing a genenral mercantile, forwarding and commission bus! ness. To take, receive and bold real estate of every description necessary to carry 00 said business. The principal office for the transaction of bustuess shall'1 be in Eugene City. Tbe amount of capital stock'is fixed at twonty thousand dollars, In shares of twenty dollars each. It is reported that a stock of goods will be received in about four weeks. Centennial Wkkk-Rkduction oV Parks. J. J. Brandt, Superintendent of tbe Oregon and California Railroad has sbutuit- ted to tbe Common Council of Portland a proposition ' relating to ' the reduction of fares during "Centennial week." At pres ent, it is the intention of the ' citizens of Portland to have tbo celobration continue through four days, if such arrangements can possibly be effected commencing Tuesday morning July 4th, and lasting until Friday evening. Substantially, Mr. Urandt s propo sition is as follows: During the week, com mencing July 3d, and ending Saturday 8th, the railroad company will convey passen gers at hall rates Dctween lort lund and Eugene City. At the preset) t rate it costs a person ?14 to go from Eugene to Portland and back. During the week of the celebration, passengers can go to and fro between the points named for ST. No charge is made for persons coming from beyond Eugene. Those ' who come from Rosoburg, and other points south of Eugene will have to pay no more in going to Port land and returning than 87 each. Persons going from points north of Eugone will pay half the rates usually charged.. . Quick Timb. The steamer City of Salem left ' Portland on Saturday moroini; at o'clock and reached here on Sunday evening before 9 o'clock, being the quitkest time ever made between these points. It begins too look as though the Willamette river may be navigable above Corvallis, General Michlor to tbe contrary notwith standing. Last week tho Champion took away 150 tons which is evidence of the depth of water, and tbe Sulem'a trip shows that not much time need be lost. The Comi.no Fourth. By an item else where in this paper it will be seen that ex tensive arrangements are to be made in Portland for celebrating the coming Fourth of July. And also that that the railroad company is putting in a bid for a "Centen nial" of its own in carrying passengors to that city. Our citizens 'ought 'to at once take the matter of a celebration at home in hand, and begin the necessary' preliminary arrangements. Will they do it I Too Much Powder.
