ABSOLUTELY PURE
OREGON WEATHER REPORT.
TOR WESTERN OREGON, FOR WEEK ENDING
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1891.
The weather has been cool and
cloudy and general rains have
fallen. Frosts occured in various
portions on September 27th and
2$th. Snow fell on Mary's Peak,
Benton county, on the 29th, the
first : of the season. The temper
ature averege three degrees a day
below the normal. Over one-half
ot an inch of rain fell during the
week.
CROPS.
The frosts nipped a few tomato
and , other vines, but did no ser
ious damage. Some oats and
wheat that were not thresh
ed, were slightly damaged
by the rains. Plowing on
stubble land was commenced and
considerable summer fallowed
wheat has been sown. Potatoes
are being dug and the yield is very
large. Apples and pears are be
ing picked. The grass is growing
nicely and affords good pasture.
Grape picking and wine making
will begin next week in some of
the southern counties.
Some Corrections. Most of ou
readers will probably remember the
article on early days which the
Gazette published in its issue of July
31st, 1S91, furnished us by Mr. Ash
by Pierce, whose biography the article
contained. A few mistakes occurred
in the statements made and we have
been requested to correct them. The
first one reads like this: "In M.ircli
1847, he (Mr. Pierce) joined Nathaniel
Brown's train and started for Oregon."
Brown's should have been Bowman's.
The next one rends: "In 1847 he
came to Benton county, and located on
the farm now owned by Caleb Davis,
which is some five miles west of this
city."' Mr. ' Pierce came to Corvallis
that year to locate, but he found his
claim was taken by other parties, so
he returned to Linn county, where he
remained till 1849, when he went to
California in search of gold. The
third mistake is: "At that time (1850)
Corvallis had never been thought of."
But it was. Mr. Avery's house was
built in the spring of 1850, and goods
were being sold three months before.
Speaking about freight rates, the state
ment was made that competition be
tween the river b ats from Corvallis
to Portland reduced freight from $10
to $6 per ton. Il should have been
tint the introduction of railroads
brought it down to $6, and the O. &
C. railroad was completed up the val
ley, when freight was carried as low as
$3 and $4 per ton. We regret the
occurrence of the mistakes, and we
trust that these will be satisfactory cor
rections. AN INTERESTING BOOK.
The well-known writer and historian
Mr. J. W. Buel, author of "The Beauti
ful Story," '-The Story of Man," "The
Living World," "Russia an,d Siberia,"
etc., lias just completed what is probab
ly the greatest of his works, entitled
"Heroes of Unknown Seas and Savage
Lands." The work is a complete re
coid of the discovery of all lands, and
contains descriptions of the first visits
made by Europeans to the wild races
of the world. The descriptions of the
superstitions appertaining to the sea
and the obstacles which strange beliefs
opposed to extend voyages are most in
teresting and instructive. The work
also comprises an authentic history of
the discovery of America by the Viking
Sea-Rovers, and its settlement by the
Scandinavians in the ninth century.
It is supplemented with thrilling nar
ratives of voyages, discoveries, adven
tures, battles, darings and sufferings of
all the heroic characters and bold ex
plorers who have made ocean history
and who have established supremacy
over the most savage lands of the earth.
The book, which is a most instructive
and eutertaining one from cover to
cover, contains 600 large quarto pages,
and is eml-ellished with more than 300
original eai avians and several large
double-"p;ge colored pl-nes, liiawn es
pecially for the work by the most fa
mous artists of the day. It is elegant
ly bound and b a book which should
