General Exodus' Leaves Board Walks
and Beaches Nearly Deserted.

Like Arabs. Summer visitors in Sea
Bide have silently folded their tents
and stolen away to town. Many cozy
homes, so recently the scenes of much
gaiety, are now boarded up as a pro
tection against Winter storms, and the
once crowded boardwalks and streets
are practically deserted. Every one is
carrying away quantities of stored-up
energy, gained at the beach, and like
wise a generous sprinkling of freckles
and sunburn. The present-day styles
of wearing open-throated blouses and
gowns is responsible for the tan and
burned necks which the fair belle will
struggle bravely to eradicate before the
social season is In swing. At any rate,
it is the badge of good, healthful liv
ing, which means beautiy eventually.
Mrs. Annie D. Gulss has recently pur
chased a building site in Hermosa Park
and is now arranging to have a hand
some Summer residence erected for her
use early In the Spring.
Fay Young, a well-known baker of
Boise. Idaho, Is passing a fortnight in
Seaside.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C Jones and party,
of Portland, who have been enjoying
beach life at Seaside, returned to their
home.
Judge and Mrs. T. J. Cleeton, of Port
land, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Knutson
passed last week in one of Godfrey's
cottages.
One of the merriest dances of the
season was that given Wednesday
night at the Hotel Moore colonial
grill and parlors by the younger set.
Many motor parties were made up In
Gearhart and surrounding points to at
tend the gay affair. An attractive
floral decoration, principally of dahlias.
In a riot of coloring, made a pleasing
foil for the pretty Summery frocks of
the fair debutantes. Among those
who enjoyed this jolly affair were

The church is to be undenominational in character. Rev. Snjder,
of Portland, was in charge of the services.
The dedication service was read by Rev. C. Sandsborough, of Oregon
City, while the sermon was preached by Rev. Charles Hays. D D.
of Portland. Other ministers present were: Rev. W. Graff, of Beth
any Or ; Rev. J. Kratt. D. D.. pastor of the First German Baptist
Church, of Portland: Rev. McKenzie. of Tillamook, being represented
by the Rev Mrs. McKenzie. The evening address was delivered by
Rev Mr. George, pastor of the Friends' Church of Portland.

GEARHART COTTAGES CLOSING
Golf Tournament Event of Chief Im
portance In Last Ten Days.
GEARHART, Or., Aug. 29. (Special.)
"Goodby Everybody" Is waved from
the cars as each train pulls out, and the
little groups at the stations bid the
eastward travelers farewell. Many of
the cottages are closed or are being
prepared for the Winter, but some will
be kept open until well Into the Fall.
The season has been an unusually gay
one, golf, swimming, riding, dancing
and cards all having their places in the
entertainment.
Gearhart Hotel has been the scene
of much entertainment during the last
ten days, golf, of course, taking tirst
place. During the tournament there
were many Informal tea parties given
by the occupants of cottages. Mrs.
George A. Marshall entertained at a
tea. Tuesday. Mrs. David T. Honey
man was a hostess Friday. Mrs. James
A. Dougherty and Mrs. Chester Griffin
Murphy entertained in a similar man
ner the latter part of the week and
numerous small dinner parties rounded
out the week's gayety. Mr. an Mrs.
Oskar E. Huber were hosts for a Welsh
rarebit supper Friday evening.
The "golf ball," given by the hotel
management Thursday evening In honor
of the participants of the golf tourna
ment, was a delightful affair. Many
young people, who are summering in
Seaside, motored over for the dance.
Prizes were awarded for the hesitation
waltz and the onestep. Mrs. Bert Far
rar, of Seattle, and Charles MacKenzie,
also, of Seattle, won the one-step prize,
and Miss Elizabeth Huber and John
Latourette the prize for the hesitation
waltz.
Jack Burns is one of the late ar
rivals, and is passing the rest of the
season with his family.
Mr. and Mrs. Oskar E. Huber and the
Misses Dorothy, Winnifred and Eliza
beth Huber and Miss Violet Erskins re
turned to Portland Wednesday. Miss
Huber's wedding to Kurt Koehler will
be a brilliant event of September 16.
Mrs. T. J. Mendenhall and Miss Nellie
McKlnley were at the hotel this week.

LAUNCH TRIP BEACH FROLIC
Long Hikes Are Taken by Youth at
Beacli Center.
BEACH CENTER, Wash.. Aug. 29.
(Special.) One of the events of the
past week was a trip to Sand Island
and Fort Canby taken by a party of
picnickers from Beacn Center. The
trip was made in a launch and was one
of the most successful of the season.
The party included Mrs. G. M. Thor
sen, Mrs. J. Henessy, Miss Ruth Kier
nan. Miss Marie Brady, Miss Viola
Thorsen, Emmett Rathbun, Frank
Kiernan and Alder Nelson.
Not to be outdone by Adrian Wild
man and Harry Gevurtz, who hiked
from Beach Center to Ocean Park and
back In one day last week a trip of
22 miles a number of boys from
Ocean Park walked to Beach Center,
than to North Head and back again
to Ocean Park, making In all about 35
miles. The hikers were William
Haseltine, Arthur Mack, Richard Mont
gomery and Cordey Sendstake.
Miss Kathleen Sealy Is entertaining

days has caused an unusual number
of festivities of all kinds to be
planned by the beach visitors. Picnics
seem to be the favorite diversion this
season. One of the most delightful
was taken to North Head and Dead
man's Hollow Monday by a party of
young people of Seavlew. After the
hike the group visited the lighthouse
and then spread a dainty basket lunch
eon in Deadman's Hollow. Those who

The Summer season at this beach Is
waning rapidly. Although there are by
far more people here than at this time
last year, nevertheless the exodus of
vacationists and Summer residents has
been rapid during the last week.
The principal event of the week was
the public clambake given on the bay
beach, near the north Jetty, Sunday
afternoon. More than BOO persons came
for the day from various valley cities
on the two excursion trains.
Mme. June Reed, of New York, vio
linist, gave her second concert of the
season Tuesday evening at the Log
Cabin. Mme. Reed's selections Included
both classical and popular music. She
was assisted by Mrs. Ambrose Mlddle
ton.N of Eugene, mezzo-soprano. and
Miss Alicia McElroy. pianist. Mrs. Mld
dleton Is an Instructress In the school
of music at the University of Oregon.
