1914. WILD SEA WAVES DRAW HUNDREDS TO BEACHES FOR OUTINGS Lateness of Season Fails to Stem Tide of Vacationists Making for Shore's Hotels and Cottages. OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, AUGUST a Tills sufluai BAYOCEAN. Or.. Aug. 29. (Spe cial.) The steady Influx of vaca tionists here continues unabated. Bungalow city presents the appear ance of a thriving community and the hotels are accommodating a capacity number of guests. There Is not a cot tage on the beach which does not house a merry party of pleasure-seek era who are enjoying the varied amusements which Bayocean has to offer. Wednesday evening was "stunt nisrht" at the natatorium. some ex cellent examples of fancy diving were given, notable among which were the swallow dive, corkscrew, jackknlfe one and a half and piledriver dives. The spectators experienced many thrills from the daring feats and high dives. Those participating were: Chester Hall, Percy Bowen. Byard Johnson. Harry Porter, Stanley Cha Din. Edwin Tracy. Howard Hutchinson Jesse Perry, Frank M. Lewis and Floyd Banf ord. Cottagers Pick Wild Berrien. Wild berries, suitable for pies be cause of their delicate fiavor. grow abundantly on the peninsula in clo proximity to the cottagers. The main varieties are the blackberry, the red and blue huckleberry, the salarberry and the salmonberry. Birthday surprise parties have been numerous here this summer. The lat est was given Saturday to F. R. Nich- olls, when a number of friends assem bled at his home to offer congratula tions. Mrs. Nicholls served at Dutch lunch. Those present were: Mrs. J. F. Bowen, the Misses Lennie Bowen and Carrie Nunemaker; Stanley Chapin, Lowell Kern, Percy Bowen, Jesse Perry, Charles Newcastle, Frank M. Lewis, Herbert Baker and Walter Sparks. An informal da'nsant was given at Hotel Bayocean Monday by Mrs. W. E. Hutchinson. Among those present were: Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Latourette, Mr. and Mrs. O. W. Mlllke, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Bowman, the Misses Sedonla Shaw, Katherlne Ward Pope, Harriet and Mary Kern, Helen Tschudy, Ro land Lockwood, Stanley Chapin, M. Cremere, Paul Hendricks and Lowell Kern. Girl Give Luncheon at Hotel. The Misses Marion and Genevieve Chapin entertained the Misses Goldle Grissom and Elizabeth Lewis with a luncheon at Hotel Bayocean Monday. Miss Lewis has since returned to Port land. Mr. and Mrs. J. J Read motored to Neah-Kah-Nle last week and after a day replete with pleasures returned to Bayocean Miss Georgia Bailey, of Portland Is the present guest of Miss Jean Clem ens. She will remain here for the rest of the season. Mrs. L. V. Surface, of Portland, Is established In a bungalow. Roland M. Lockwood Is enjoying beach life at Bayocean. He made a flying trip to Portland Sunday, return ing the following day, to remain here until his departure for Stanford Uni versity. C. E. Francis, Mrs. E. J. Floyd and Esther and Floyd Banford are reg istered at Bungalow City. Mrs. T. B. Potter, of the Potter Re alty Company. Is having a pleasant outing here. W. A. Willis, secretary of the Port land Cattle Company, and his wife are dwellers in Bungalow City. St Petersburg is the home of M. and Mme. Tschetscholt, who are registered at Hotel Bayocean. San Franciscans at Resort. Mrs. Fannie Johnson, of San Fran cisco, is sojourning at Bayocean. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Thomas were over from Portland for a week. E. Carse, of Portland, spent a week with his wife, who is the director of the Hotel Bayocean -orchestra. Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Davis, of Port land, are guests of the Bayside Hotel. Miss Maud Hatiielil is enjoying an outing here. Mr. and Mrs. James Curran, of Port land, are sojourning a'c Bayocean. Mrs. M. E. Aaris and family have been making an extended stay at the Mallory Apartments. William Hamilton, of Portland, was the guest of Leland Chapin last week. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Rea were over from Portland for a vacation. K. F. McLeod is another from Port land who has been enjoying an outing here. E. R. Oden. a recent guest at Hotel Bayocean. hails from San Francisco. Percy Bowen, of the Bayocean nata torium, has been joined by his mother, Mrs. J. F. Bowen, and his sister, Lennie, who will make an extended stay. Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Shortridge, of New York City, registered at the Bay side Hotel ilast week. Portland is the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Stowe, who are summering here. A number of persons enjoyed the deep-sea fishing trips last Wednesday on the launch Henrietta. The catch consisted of 24 larsre "beauties." BAR VIEW SAND IKLIGHTS TOTS Fresh Air Youngsters Play While Elders Dance at Pavilion. BAR VIEW, Or.. Aug. 29. (Special.) The "Fresh Air" children from Port land, who are enjoying a two weeks' stav on the farms near Tillamook, were brought to Bar View on Friday for a frolic on the beach. They were well chaperoned by Tillamook people and enjoyed themselves Immensely, some of the more daring going in the surf, while the others contented them selves with playing in the sand. They were entertained by a drill by the life-saving crew and a clambake pre pared by the people of Bar View. Dancing and bowling still continue to be popular forms of amusement at Bar View. The dances are drawing the largest crowds of the season and the bowling alleys are crowded every Serene siZ Ae4oorZi, ?re?c evening with both professionals and beginners. Women are especially in terested in the game and many of them are becoming experts. Mr. and Mrs. Earle Larrimore left for their home in Portland Tuesday after a two weeks' outing near Smith's Lake. Helen Lesser end Florence Dailey, of Forest Grove, came in this week and are staying at Villa Camp. Mr. ard Mrs. Arthur H. Lewis, of Portland, arrived for a short visit with Mrs. Lev. Is' mother. Mrs. Alley. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Stafford and son, Arthur, left for their home in Banks Tuesday after a two weeks' camping trip. Mrs. S. A. Tomkins and Otto Schnauffer, compos ing the Bar View Orchestra, hiked to Seaside and back Monday and Tues day. Monday night they played in the seaside dancehall, relieving the regu lar musicians. The boys came back Tuesday afternoon in time for the reg ular uanco in the evening! They re port an excelent trail across the Neah-kah-nie Mountains. Mrs. Isabel Ransom and daughters, Bessio and Elizabeth, and Mrs. J. L. Karnopp left Portland for a visit at Villa Camp. Mrs. Emily Shaw, of Milwaukie, is at Lake View Camp until September 1. Recent arrivals occupying cottages at Saltair Beach are: Miss Emma Garner, of Hamilton, Mont; Mrs. H. P. Eales, Miss Vyrdna Eales, Forest H. Delbert Eales. of Hannibal. Mo.. A party from Hotel Saltair, Including ladies, went deep-sea fishing this week and brought in several large fish, among which were deep-sea bass, red snappers, len cod and sea robins. H. B. Powell caught the largest cod, which weighed 40 pounds. Mrs. Abby Weeks, with her daughter, returned to Portland after spending a month at Hotel Saltair. Mrs. Sam Loney and daughter. Among them are a crowd of Portland people who have iu..d from Astoria over the mountain to Manhattan Beach, making the trip across the mountain in five hours and the entire trip In two days. Many thrilling adventures war experienced, such as escaping the waves at Sllverton. Hug and Humbug Points, and many Interesting pictures were taken. The hlkern reached their destination none the worse for their long journey. Several of the party re turned to Portland the following day. A supper and bonfire M the beach were the amusements. Mrs. Donald Mackay and Mrs. W aV Mackay, who have been guests of Mrs W. H. Skene, who Is in the Churchill cottage, left for home Tuesday. A tea at The Tavern Tuesday wn attended by the guests and the oc cupants of the various cottages. Tea was poured by Miss Helen Darter, ot Denver, Colo., and the Mlssen Brown and Stryker and Mrs. Henderson nn slsted. The Tavern was gay with Au tum foliage and golden roil and the afternoon passed very pleasantly. Mrs. Edward Falling, Mlsa Olive Fall ing and Miss Failing are In the Isom cottage for a few weeks. With them are Miss Olivia Shepherd, of Hood River, and Master Edward Falling, of Portland.
