THE SUNDAY OKEGOKIAN, PORTLAND, AUGUST 24. 1902.
The crowd that has flocked -tho beach
for th,e past two or three wooks is slowly
turning homeward. Another week will
find the beach almost deserted. Yet some
of the cottagers will remain until the
second week In September,, and even
later. It Is to be regretted that so few
will remain at the beaches to enjoy the
beautiful Indian Summor that invariably
comes during the month of September.
It is during the latter part of tho season
that most of the wild berries and fruits
'indigenous to the seacoast ripen. Even
, now numerous parties go hunting tho flno
flavored blackberry, huckleberry, calal
berry, and salmon-berry. The girls of
the beach have developed a new craze
of adorning their hais with fishhooks,
snipe-wings, and wishbones of that bird,
whereas the boys have -a craze of getting
canes of redwood and crabapplc. Tho
present season has been somewhat better
ior the hotel-keeper than last season.
Etlll there is no comparison botweon
hotel trade of sixtyears ago and tho.pres-
ent time.
One of the ma!nreason3 for tho early
return of pleasure-seekers Is the attrac
tion of the Elks Carnival, and many
botel-keepers x rejoice that the present
carnival will be the last of which, the
&21ks will have the management.
GOOD TI3IBS AT KLAVEI..
fenests Have Goad Time In Hiding:
and Other Amusements.
It is now slorlous weather down at
KFlavel, and the very meridian of the sea
son. Flavel Is most attractive to those
fcwho follow the horses and who perhaps
in the evening like a little additional
amusement at the "clubs," bowling, play-
Hng billiards, ping-pong, or a social game
of cards. Professor Brown is at Flavel
rirtth his entire string of riding horses,
and the last few weeks many merry par
ties have made the delightful trip through
Primrose Path, down by the Llfesavlng
Station, on through the fort, past the
llehthouse. down to the beach, and on
feround to the hotel, via Warrenton.
Saturday night another enjoyable
"guests' hop" was given, and it proved
o bo a decided social success. Good
xnuslo and cool sea .air inspired overy-
tbody, and tho merryv waltzes were en
thusiastically danced.
Flavel is especially inviting just now.
fas there are many beautiful marine sights
to behold dally. Full-rigged sailing ves
sels are , daily entering the mighty Co
lumbia, and pass within a stone's throw
of tho hotel veranda, like ghastly, whlte-
jwlnged sentinels bn dress parade. The
sight of two and three "four-masters,"
with all sail set, swinging lightly into
their fresh-water berths, is worth going
many miles to behold.
I For the past two weeks Flavel has en
jtertained the largest crowds ever known
!ln the history of tho place. The bath
ing grounds have been especially popular
at Flavel; not an accident has occurred,
;and tho beach has been especially firm
jthe whole season. There is no undertow
at Flavel beach.
1 Mrs. Mitchell, tho manager of Flavel,
has proven a charming hostess, and has
made Flavel a large. Jolly, good-natured
family, even with Its many guests.
The season at Flavel promises to con
tinue for some time, and several social f
events are yet to come off.
The event of the week was the birth
day party given by Miss Minnie Flelsch
ner. The young folks arc quite as fash
ionable this season as their older broth
ers and sisters, and their fathers and
mothers. Tho birthday party given Tues
day evening, August 19. by Miss Minnie
JFJelschncr. daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
(I. N. Flelschner, of Portland, was one
,of the most interesting features of the
iweek at Flavel. It was Miss Minnie's
seventh birthday, and was commemorated
dn the most approved style. There was
jtaffy-pulllng; Ice cream and cake re
xxestments were served; dancing was in
dulged in .and throughout all was the un
Jnlsuikable buzz of up-to-date conversa
tion. The young people, in their splck-end-Epan
Summer toggery, presonted a
inost pleasing spectacle. Some of the col
tared help of tho house contributed sweet
minstrel songs. It was a very merry
foarty, and all enjoyed themselves hugely.

OX THE OREGON" SIDE.
Many Excursionists Go to Thompson
Falls.
A favorite place with excursionists at
this beach 2a Thompson's Falls. The falls
aro Inland two miles, and occupy a mld
dlo position between Gearhart and Sca
gjde. The water which is that of a clean
mountain stream, falls some 105 feet and
furnishes the water supply for Gearhart
Park.
'Another spot of Interest to Easterners
is' the quaint little Indian vHlage on a
Kcff overlooking the Necanleum River.
Here the relic-hunter finds xcmaine of
implements and arms used by the early
CJatsops.
. Still another spot of interest is" the salt
cairn where it is said LcwL" and Clark
boiled sea water for ealt. These are a
lew of the spoto of historical Interest
on this coast.
At. Gearhart.
George Fussell, the veteran scout and
bear-trapper, ha3 a trap set for a lone
somo bear, near Gearhart Park. All
cameras aro loaded for the occasion of
its capture, and Mr. Henry Schulderman
ha3 even laid claim to the skin.
Miss Etta Schulderman gavo the young
pooplo of Gearhurt a candy pull last
Wednesday evening. As usual, little can
dy was pulled to the finish, as tho con

Musical Entertainment and Dnnces
Are Order of the Week.
An entertainment was held at Long
Beach Hall Wednesday evening for the
benefit of the Catholic Church. The en
tertainment, which was principally a mu
slcale, was followed by a dance. The
programme of the muslcale was as fol
lows: Opening overture, Exrerest's Or
chestra; song. Miss Katherine Lawler; In
strumental solo, Ed Sheridan; vocal duet,
the Misses Shaw; song, Mr. Fitzslmmons.
Johnnie Everest's Orchestra still con
tinues to play at the Long Beach dances.
Everest's Orchestra carries Its Portland
popularity to the beach, as Is evidenced
by the good attendance at his dances.
The dances here are most Informal, and
accordingly have a characteristic attrac
tion. At Senvlerr.
On Monday evening, at the Hackney
cottage, Seavlew, was assembled tho mu
sical talent of the beach. Few such gath
erings of musical talent are enjoyed at
the beach, and the fact was fully appre
ciated. The programme was as follows:
Piano solo, "Dance of the Demons," Lll-
Ian Brown; vocal solo. "Love's Sorrow,"
Lame Johnson: violin solo, "Simple Con
fesslon." Dazye Botfuhr; vocal solo, "Ma

"Ora Pro Nobis," Inez Wheeler; violin
selections. Professor Steblnger: vocal solo.
"Song of Thanksgiving," Professor J. Ep

Shaw; solo. Miss Lulu Edwards Brannln
Robert Shields, of Late Lake, when tak
ing his first walk on the beach, at Sea-
view, came upon something struggling
In the wet sand near the water's edge.
Upon Investigating he pulled from the
sand one of the largest flounders ever
seen. The fish had evidently been at the
end of a line once upon a time, and car
ried In Its mouth a hook and two feet of
line belonging to Clinton Stone. Stone,
upon Identifying his stolen article, re
claimed It, and all rejoiced. It Is claimed
that none but Seavlcwers and Hackney
people are eligible to such kind of fish
lng, and Long Beach has as yet made no
objection.
A whist party was held Wednesday af
ternoon at Seavlew at Mrs. Kutschan's
boarding-house for the benefit of the
Catholic Church. Mrs. Epplng captured
first prize, and Mrs. Monk and Mrs.
Campion took the two bcoby prizes. Ten
tables were played from 2 to 5 o'clock.
Refreshments were served throughout the
afternoon. The party was a decided finan
cial success.
Dancing, which Is ever a pastime at
the coast, 'was In order at Hackney's on
Tuesday evening. As usual, all repaired
later to a bonfire on the beach. This dance
followed an Informal hop at tho same
place on Monday afternoon. It was the
first attempt at an afternoon hop, and
was well attended.
