M ARTIN L UTHER K ING J R . January 14, 2015 2015 special edition Keith Thomajan has a welcome out for volunteers. Sign Up for Community Service Projects Volunteers honor King’s call to action Hands On Greater Portland, the volunteer arm of United Way of the Columbia-Willamette, is coordinating 60 volunteer ser- vice projects as part of its Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service, to be held Jan. 15 through the MLK holiday on Jan. 19. Now in its eighth year, the effort is part of a nationwide day of service designed to mobilize tens of thousands of caring indi- viduals around the nation to vol- unteer in service to others and celebrate the life and legacy of the late Dr. King. Last January, more than 1,000 volunteers in the four-county Portland area, answered the call by participating through 46 sepa- rate volunteer projects across the region totaling 3,900 hours of volunteer service. “The great Martin Luther King Jr. once said, ‘Everybody can be great because anybody can serve,’” said Keith Thomajan, United Way’s chief executive officer for the Columbia- Willamette chapter. “We know that our region’s best work comes up and out of the communities we serve. That’s why, on this special week- end of service, we are inviting every resident in our region to join us – to link arms with us – to come together to accelerate posi- tive change in our four counties. We hope you’ll join us and help us realize Dr. King’s dream,” Thomajan said. Volunteer projects taking place during the Martin Luther King Weekend of Service in- clude restoration and refur- bishing projects at schools and community centers, sorting food and clothing, serving meals, home repairs, planting trees, and more. Registration for the MLK Weekend of Service is now open. Available volunteer opportuni- ties and more information can be viewed at unitedway-pdx.org/ mlk-weekend.
