TITE MORNINGOREG OMAN, SATURDAY, JUNE 8, 10ft?,
STUDENTS WILL ASSIST
HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS TO ADDRESS
85.0OO POSTCARDS.
Perplexing Probfem Local War Sav
inffi Stamp Campaign Mana
. (r Happily Solved.
One of the perplexities of the local
war savings stamp campaign was solved
yesterday, when 180 pupils of Lincoln
High School, captained by Principal T.
T. Davis, volunteered to address the
85,000 postcards which are to be sent to
the registered voters of Portland and
Multnomah County.
Upon the postals will appear the
President's proclamation regarding the
war savings stamp cause and other in
formation relative to the drive. The
magnitude of the task, coupled with
the fact that there is no Government
appropriation for clerical work, at first
dumbfounded the headquarters crew.
The generous offer of the students
solved the riddle.
Students will copy the names of reg
istered voters from the precinct books,
beginning on Friday, June 14. Similar
provisions will be made in other Ore
gon counties until cards have been sent
to every one of the state's 305,000 reg
istered voters.
Approximately 3500 field workers will
be called to service for June 28, when
all Portland will be solicited for war
savings pledges, according to the esti
mates of Frank McCrillis, who is "in
charge of the city campaign.
Plans for continuation of the war
savings stamp organization in Portland
schools through vacation were present
ed yesterday to the Parent-Teachers'
Association at Central Library, S. C.
Bratton appearing in behalf of the cam
paign. It is Understood that the asso
ciation will maintain the school organ
ization throughout the Summer.
The appointment of Miss Harriet
Cumming as office assistant to George
"W. Caldwell, city manager of the speak
ers' bureau, was announced yesterday.
On Monday the war savings organiza
tion will open new offices at Liberty
Temple.
J. I. Casey Stays by Portland.
James D. Casey, formerly traveling
freight agent of the Milwaukee lines,
one of the old-time Portland traffic
men who refused to move away from
Portland to accept employment of
fered by the company elsewhere, has
taken a place with the Baggage &
Omnibus Transfer Company as a train
solicitor. He began his new work
yesterday.
