BROWN AND FAMILY. AL JOLSON IS SEEN AND INTERVIEW IS GRANTED Hereunder Is Set Down the Results Thereof Mighty Comedian Makes Good Copy What? - . BY LEONE CASS BAER. -f sIRST off the bat will settle a dis pute between a reminine corre spondent," who designates herself as A. and her iriena n am Hssumms the friendship), who Is designated as B. A writes in, or at least she wrote in about a week ago, to know, where Al Jolson was born and when. So far no one has ever followed an Impulse to get out a little brocnure or text of some sort on the real name of actors and where they were born, and why. Occasionally some enterprising alma nac, or some publisher of these queer little advertising notebooks that no one ever uses, gets out a list of 10 or 12, heads 'em "Important Facts About the Stage" and when I don't need 'em, say, when I'm looking for a clean hanky or a receipe for freckle lotion I run across the information I don't need. When I do need it, to an swer some patient correspondent, I locate the freckle lotion recipe. That's a bromide, but it's life. This particular correspondent must have had a hunch that the only dates I can remember are when Colum bus discovered America In 1776, and my own birthday, although the two are not exactly relative. I merely state it because the outside world believes to a man that newspaper people have dates and statistics all pigeonholed neatly tnrougn our indi vidual and collective gray matter, or what we are pleased to call our brain. It is a dull day indeed when we aren t required to inform someone offhand over the phone what is the salary of the Secretary of Agriculture or what was the actual weight of Jumbo, Bar- num's factious elephant, or now many bushels of wheat Kansas produced in the year of 1906. Little queries like how old is Lily Langtry. and how many times Nat Goodwin has been mar ried and if I think Billie Burke really loves her husband have ceased to startle any more. Someone al ways knows, and . we get hold of the someone who fits the case, and there's the answer. With Al Jolson you remember, we were speaking of him away back at the beginning of this story it Is quite a different mat ter. No one knew where the famous funster was born. Nor how long ago or how brief ago the event hap pened. Having a hunch that maybe the information would not be forth coming in an instant, the correspond ent added, postscriptishly, '"1 have heard Mr. Jolson was born In Quincy, 111. I used to go to school with a Harold. Joalson In Quincy, but I don't know It it's the same one. Governor Withycombe will be urgred to attend the July meeting of the In terstate Bridge Commission and assist in bringing about an amicable settle ment of differences between members of the commission relative to the di vision of profits received from the op eration of the bridge. That Rufus Holman, chairman of the Multnomah Countv board, will stand with the Clarke County Commissioners in de manding that Clarke County receive more than its rro rata share or tne profits was asserted at the Courthouse yesterday. This expected flgnt, which promises to embroil members of the commission In a heated controversy, arises from the fact that Clarke County will dei mind two-fifths of the profits from tbe bridge Instead of the two-sevenths which Is regarded as the fair pro rata division. An effort was made yesterday by the Clarke County Commissioners to draw two-nfths of the profits, but Commis sioner Muck refused to sanction any such payment. Mr. Muck told the Clarke County members that he would authorize the payment of the two- sevenths, but would put up a fight be fore he would give Clarke County more than he thought It should receive. The Clarke County officials then accepted a check for two-sevenths of the total bridge profits and, with Commissioner Holman. promised to have the question threshed out at the forthcoming meet ing of the commission. Statistics made public yesterday show that the total revenue from the Inter state bridge since its completion and up, to June 1 amounts to $34,615. The total operating and other expense amounts to 7371, leaving a net profit of 127.243. Of this net profit Clarke County pre sented a claim for $10,897 as its two fifths share. Holding that the Wash ington county was entitled only to two sevenths. Mr. Muck compelled reduction of the claim to 7783, which was paid. As Multnomah County spent $1,250.- 000 and Clarke County $300,000' for the construction of the Interstate bridge. air. muck insists that Multnomah Coun ty snouia receive pronts In the same ratio. professor of social service, giving In formation on "The Crippled Children's Law is Issued by the University of Oregon. Why, I wouldn't die in that vil lage, let alone be born in It. You can put that in the paper, too, tor I played the place once and I'm never going: I there again. Tell your correspondent I that Harold and I are not related. "Let's see; she wants my age. WelL I rm Just in my 31st year. That, too. Is proof I m not her old schoolmate, for no woman is 31 years old. They are all 29 until they are 60, I've noticed." Al Jolson is talkative with jokes and repartee on the tip of his tongue, and as much fun off stage as on. He's golf mad and baseball insane, and that's what he talked about for this interview. The reason it isn't in the interview is because I didn't take I notes, and I don't know the Chicago Tigers from a puttee and can't for the life of me disentangle the home runs from the drives.
