FRUIT PEN FAVOR CANNERY

KOKEST GIIOVE, March 13. (Spe
cial.) At a mass meeting: of the fruit
rrowers In this city Saturday, a step
was taken towards the establishment of
a co-operative fruit and vegetable
cannery at this place. "The meeting
was presided over by County Fruit In
spector H. C. Atwell, who had arranged
for the gathering. J. V. Holt, man
ager of the Kugene Fruit Grower's As
sociation, spoke at length telling of the
successful cannery which has been in
operation at Kugene for the past two
years. This plant was at first capital
ized at $4000 and later increased to
$25,000, with more than two hundred
stockholders.
It is a big success and Mr. Holt urged
the growers of this vicinity to establish
such a plant. H. S. Boshow, manager of
the cannery at Nooksack Wash., spoke
in favor of a co-operative plant. Mr.
Mulkey, of the Southern Pacific Rail
road Company, promised if such an
establishment should materiHze, special
shipping rates could be secured. Al
though no definite action was taktn,
a committee was appointed t'j ascertain
the number of stockholders, which
could be secured for such an enterprise
and report at a similar gathering to be
held in this city on Saturday, March 23.
