Steamship Companies Will Act
as Individual Agents.
Arrangements for excursions from
Portland to points off the mouth of the
Columbia River are being arranged for
by the managers of the North Pacific
Steamship Company and the Southern
Pacific Company. The excursions will
be nin if the programme for one day's
maneuvers of the Atlantic fleet off the
river are confirmed. The former com
pany will send the steamship Roanoke
and the Southern Pacific will fit out
the steamship Breakwater for excur
sions outside the bar.
As the schedule for the fleet now
stands the warships will sail from San
Francisco. May 18. and the data of ar
rival on Puget Sound has been set for
five days later. Steaming at ten knots
an hour, this will give the vessels ample
time to spend 36 hours off the mouth of
the Columbia River and then make the
Sound cities on time.
The local Commercial Club, has taken
no active steps in the matter as yet.
Secretary Glltner has received a letter
from the Commercial Club, of Astoria.
announcing that a limited number of
tickets for an excursion out over the
bar would be allowed the Portland Club.
Beyond the letter from the Astoria club,
the local club has received no informa
tion in regard to the movements of the
fleet.
From Tillamook Head north to the
entrance to Shoalwater Bay there is am
ple room for the maneuvering of the
fleet, and the spectacle could be viewed
from the shore at all points. On the
south side visitors at Seaside. Gearhart
and Fort Stevens could command an
excellent view of the warships. Excur
sion boats could give passengers a day's
outing which would be unsurpassed, and
the people who visited the North Beach
would be afforded a magnificent view of
the ships from all shore points between
Bcavlew and Ocean Park.

French Iilner Ceylon Is Repaired at
San Francisco..
SAN FRANCISCO, May U. Workmen
spent all of today at the Greenwich
street dock making ready the immense
twin screws that are to be fitted to the
French liner Ceylon before she can go out
from this port again. The big liner un
loaded a great portion of her cargo today
while the propellers were being fixed. She
lost three blades from her big propellers
while going through the Sues canal and
came -Into port disabled.
The steamer Enterprise left at 5 o'clock
tonight for Hllo with a big cargo of food
stuffs and live stock.
Much apprehension is felt here for the
safety of the American bark Will Scott,
Captain Brown, which left Newcastle
for this port 109 days ago.
When the Kosmos liner Abesslnia leaves
for Hamburg, via the Straights of Magel
lan, tomorrow, she will carry 150.000 feet
of fine California redwood for use in
Europe.
The barken tine Andromeda 6day took
on a crew for Australia and later sailed.
She goes to get a cargo of coal for local
consumption and takes a cargo of hay
and machinery.
Three and one-half million feet of lum
ber arrived in this port by sea today as
follows: The steamer Prentiss, from Eu
reka, with 407.0(10 feet: the steamer Ho
quiam, from Hoquiam, with 700,000 feet;
the schooner John G. North, from Lud
low, with 400,000 feet; the steamer Del
Norte, from Crescent City, with 285,000
feet; the steamer Northland, from the Co
lumbia River, with 875.000 feet; the
Fteamer R. D. Inman, from Seattle, with
850.000 feet.
The schooner Defender left for Hel
llngsen today.
The bark W. B. Flint, Captain Hansejn,
left for Nome today.

Hate to Astoria and The Dalles Cut
to $1 by Two Companies.
Passenger rates between Portland
and The Dalles and Portland and As
toria have been cut to $1 for each one
way trip on the Steamer Charles R.
Spencer and the boats of the Regulator
line. The eteamer Charles R. Spencer
made the first trip of the season to
Astoria yesterday on the new schedule,
and at reduced rates. Today she will
make the round trip to The Dalles, tak
ing passengers for $1 each way.
The new schedule on which the
steamer is operating calls for a round
trip to Astoria on Mondays, Wednes
days and Fridays and a round trip to
The Dalles on alternate days. The
steamer Bailey Gatzert will continue
o operate on the dally run to The
palles until further notice. There has
been come talk of placing; her on the
lower river run, but no definite ar
rangements will be made until after
June 1.
On the trip to Astoria yesterday the
eteamer Spencer carried a good-sized
crowd of passengers and she made the
run in fairly good time. It is the in
tention of Captain Spencer to cut Into
the business of the Astoria & Colum
bia River Railroad, as well as that of
the O. R. & N. Company and the Kamm
line.
MXER RETURNS TO PORTLAND
Steamship State of California Back
on San Francisco Route.
After an absence of nearly ten years,
the steamship state of California has
been returned to the Portland run. The
old-time friend arrived in the Columbia
River yesterday shortly before noon
and at midnight was moored at the
Aainsworth dock in Portland harbor.
The vessel brought a large number of
passengers and a full cargo of freight.
The steamship State of California
was built In Philadelphia in 1879 and
came through the Straits of Magellan
the same year. She entered service
between Portland and San Francisco
and for 17 years operated on the run.
Her first arrival in Portland was on
May 25. 1879. and on that famous run
was in charge of Captain Debney.
Debney remained in command of the
craft until 1888. when he was succeeded
by Captain Acklcy. "Jim" Byrnes, now
purser of the steamship Rose City, was
Identified In a like capacity with the
State of California for nearly 20 'years.
During the early yean of service on
the San Francisco-Portland run Captain
JeBsen, now master of the George W.
Elder, was bar pilot on the State of
California.

TACOMA, May 11. The United Wire
less Company is planning a line of sta
tions reaching from Tacoma to Nome,
placing them at all the more Important
ports along the Alaskan Coast.
James P. Sanders, stenographer and
member of the special board of inquiry
in the local immigration office, has been
promoted to the position of Immigration
Inspector and Inspector at Marcus, Wash
ington. The steamer Portland, after coaling and
taking freight for Alaska, left for Seattle
to complete cargo.
The British bark Loudon Hill, which
lost her grain charter, has been towed
to anchor to lay up indefinitely.
The United States transport DIx is In
port coaling and will probably also load
lumber for the Philippines.
The steam schooner Tallac is in port to
load 2,000 tons of wheat for San iFran
cisco. The fishing steamer Zapora .returned
from the banks with 125,000 pounds of
haHbut after being out six days.
The British steamer Sheila was expected
during the night to complete general
cargo for Japan.
Snagboat Goes In Commission.
Colonel Roessler, United States En
gineers, has placed the snagboat
Mathloma and the dipper dredge No. 2
in service on the Upper Willamette.

STEAMSHIP STATE
The first work to be done by the Gov
ernment craft will ' be at Black Dog
landing, where a number of snags and
a bar or two are serious obstructions
to navigation. Both the dipper and the
snag-boat will work down stream from
Black Dog.
Rale of Lindsay Confirmed.
ABERDEEN, Wash., May 11. (Spe
cial.) Judge Irwin, of the Superior
Court, today confirmed the sale of the
steamer A. G. Lindsay, notwithstand
ing the opposition of attorneys for the
small stockholders, who will be frozen
out If the confirmation should be sanc
tioned by the State Supreme Court.

judge irwin allowed the writ of in
tervention as asked for. This action
was taken by the attorneys opposing
confirmation in order to bring out
all the facts in connection with the
purchase and sale of the Lindsay.
Sheriff McKinney and E. A. Rupert,
who purchased the steamer, testified
that $48,000 was the amount-paid and
that $2000 was spent in repairs. Cap
tain Stream and other experts testified
that the Lindsay is not worth more
than $10,000 In her present condition.

William Bodemer. No figures are yet
obtainable, but the firm has been doing
a heavy business, having a large number
of branch offices.
The recent legal Investigation of the
brokerage business, together with . gen
eral business losses, caused the failure.
Street reports place the Arm's losses
all the way from $300,000 to $1,000,000. The
cause given for the failure was pressure
of creditors. Stapley Is the third of those
who were Indicated two weeks ago for
alleged bucket-shopping.

survey to Hillsboro are said to be asking
exorbitant prices for the property
needed by the company, It is probable
that work already begun on this branch
will be abandoned for the season. Efforts
of the company will be directed instead

Reports that the company is prepared
to give up work on the Hillsboro line
for this season were confirmed yesterday
by General Manager Guy W. Talbot,
when asked in regard to the rumor. He
is considering the plan of postponing the
Hillsboro line indefinitely and will go to
Newberg today or tomorrow to prepare
plans for constructing that part of the
projected system.
"We certainly will not pay the ex
cessive prices .asked for rights of way
by a number of property-owners on the
Hillsboro survey." said Mr. Talbot,

and, is willing to pay reasonable prices
for rights of way but will not submit
to being held up by avaricious property
owners. Stockholders of the Oregon Electric
Railway Company met during the past
week and ratified the extensive plans for
development already announced by the

Schedules of the Spokane, Portland &
Seattle Railway will be changed on Sun
day, May 17, In order to provide more
convenient service for Portland people
as well as to give better connections for
the Goldendale branch. Train No. 1,
which now leaves Pasco at 11 A. M., will
leave at 7:30 A. iM., and will arrive at
Vancouver at 3:36 P. M., Instead of 7:40
P. M., as at present. Train No. 2, east
bound, will leave Vancouver at 8:45 A.
M., Instead of 8:20, arriving at Pasco at
5 P. M., the same as at present.
On the Goldendale branch, there will
be corresponding changes to connect
with the main line trains. Train No. 53
will leave Goldendale at 9:15 A. M., in
