Steamship Companies Will Act
as Individual Agents.
Arrangements for excursions from
Portland to points off the mouth of the
Columbia River are being arranged for
by the managers of the North Pacific
Steamship Company and the Southern
Pacific Company. The excursions will
be nin if the programme for one day's
maneuvers of the Atlantic fleet off the
river are confirmed. The former com
pany will send the steamship Roanoke
and the Southern Pacific will fit out
the steamship Breakwater for excur
sions outside the bar.
As the schedule for the fleet now
stands the warships will sail from San
Francisco. May 18. and the data of ar
rival on Puget Sound has been set for
five days later. Steaming at ten knots
an hour, this will give the vessels ample
time to spend 36 hours off the mouth of
the Columbia River and then make the
Sound cities on time.
The local Commercial Club, has taken
no active steps in the matter as yet.
Secretary Glltner has received a letter
from the Commercial Club, of Astoria.
announcing that a limited number of
tickets for an excursion out over the
bar would be allowed the Portland Club.
Beyond the letter from the Astoria club,
the local club has received no informa
tion in regard to the movements of the
fleet.
From Tillamook Head north to the
entrance to Shoalwater Bay there is am
ple room for the maneuvering of the
fleet, and the spectacle could be viewed
from the shore at all points. On the
south side visitors at Seaside. Gearhart
and Fort Stevens could command an
excellent view of the warships. Excur
sion boats could give passengers a day's
outing which would be unsurpassed, and
the people who visited the North Beach
would be afforded a magnificent view of
the ships from all shore points between
Bcavlew and Ocean Park.

all the way from $300,000 to $1,000,000. The
cause given for the failure was pressure

'Oregon Electric Considers a
Change in Its Plans.
DELAY IN HILLSBORO LINE
Company Will Probably .Abandon the
Work Vnder Way, as Property
Owners Are Blocking Right-of-way
Purchases.
Because property-owners along the line
of the projected Oregon Electrio Railway
survey to Hillsboro are said to be asking
exorbitant prices for the property
needed by the company, It is probable
that work already begun on this branch
will be abandoned for the season. Efforts
of the company will be directed instead
to construtcion work on the projected

line to Newberg from a Junction with
the main line to Salem at Tigardville.
Reports that the company is prepared
to give up work on the Hillsboro line
for this season were confirmed yesterday
by General Manager Guy W. Talbot,
when asked in regard to the rumor. He
is considering the plan of postponing the
Hillsboro line indefinitely and will go to
Newberg today or tomorrow to prepare
plans for constructing that part of the
projected system.
"We certainly will not pay the ex
cessive prices .asked for rights of way
by a number of property-owners on the
Hillsboro survey." said Mr. Talbot,
"While most Of thA nurmlA wa haira ,o
to deal with have treated us very nicely,
a iew nave acted in a manner calculated
to discourage railroad construction and
have made demands that we will not
meet. Perhaps the number of places
where we are being held up will not be
more than five but owing to the fact
that We Cannot condemn nH arat Intn
court before next July, it will be im-
puHaiuie to complete tne Hillsboro road
this season and it will have to be post
poned. "We have a large amount of material
on nana lor tnis extension, on which
work has already started, but we will
probably withdraw our men from the
grading work and pat them to grading
for the line to Newberg from Tlgardville.
The work so far done on the Hillsboro
line, which consists' of clearing land,
grubbing stumps and grading, will stand
without injury until we are ready to
proceed."
Mr. Talbot says his company is paying
and, is willing to pay reasonable prices
for rights of way but will not submit
to being held up by avaricious property
owners. Stockholders of the Oregon Electric
Railway Company met during the past
week and ratified the extensive plans for
development already announced by the
company. The eYtenninna Intn thA T .
Willamette Valley were approved.
.uireciors oi tne company were re-elected
as follows: C. M. Pratt. A. C. Bedford,
George Barclay Moffatt, W. A. White,
Guy W. Talbot, Edward Cookingham and
S. Z. Mitchell. All but General Manager
Talbot and Edward Cookingham, of Port

In no other disease Is a thorough cleansing' of the blood more necessary
than in Contagious Blood Poison. The least particle of this insidious virus
svnll multiply in the circulation and so thoroughly contaminate the blood
that no part of the body will be exempt from the ravages of this powerful
disease. Usually the first symptom is a little sore or ulcer, insignificant in
itself, but soon the blood becomes so contaminated that the mouth and throat
ulcerate, glands in the groin swell, hair and eye-brows come out, copper
colored spots appear on the body, and frequently sores and ulcers break out
on the flesh to humiliate the sufferer. S. S. S. cures Contagious Blood Poison,
by purifying the circulation. It attacks the disease in the right way by going;
down into the circulation, neutralizing and forcing, out every particle of the
poison, and making thi3 fluid pure, fresh and health-sustaining. The im
provement commences as soon as the patient gets under the influence of
S. S. S., and continues until every trace of the disease is removed from the
blood, and the sufferer completely restored to health. Not one particle o
the poison is left for future out-breaks after S. S. S. has purged and purified
the blood. Book on the home treatment of this disease and any medical ad
vice desired free. THE SWIFT SPECIFIC CO., ATLANTA, GA.

heavy eyes, a general sense of weakness all
over you? Does your back ache? Are you
perpetually tired, with disinclination for

pressed; at times with a nameless dread as
if of some impending danger?
A SERIOUS CONDITION
If y?u whave J-ny of the above symptoms
yours Is beyond doubt a case of functional
derangement, brought on by an excessive
waste of nervous energy. The cause of your
condition may be due to a congested, en
larged or Inflamed Prostate Gland, an un
cured Contracted Disorder, or Varicocele.
Unless the damage is repaired and the tre
