GOLD EXCITEMENT.
A few days ao mention was made in this
paper of the repotted discovery of gold in
Snohomish county, Washington territory.
Quite a number of Portlanders we learn have
gone over to prospect at these recent discov
eries. The following is taken from th DU
jxitcJt of Sept. lGtli, relative to the precious
metal fever :
The gold excitement is still on the Increase.
About thirty men left this city on the Fanny Lake.
Some of thorn were fully equipped, carrying picks,
shovels, pans, bacon, flour and tobacco, and-others
went without baggage, intending tImply to locate
claims and return for their omtits If the diggings
are as rich m reported. Amocc the number are
many experienced miners, and no doubt the mines
will be thoroughly prospected.
fcamules of grain gola. &ald to have been taken
from the mines In Snohomish county, were shown
in this city yesterday. In the afternoon a number
of persons started for the mines in skiffs and ca
noes, taking ihcir outfits with them. If the mines
are half as rich as represented, a great manv peo
ple will goto them on Jrlday, when the 'Fanny
IiVe makes her next trip.
An account of the state ofaffalrs at Snohomish
city is rent us under date of Sept. 13th, by W. H.
Tirtlot, Eki., thus: "Great excitement prevails
here in regard to a report that very rich diggings
have been struck at some point on the sultan
river. The merchants and blacksmiths, with a
large number of the population of the town, have
gone up to tho mines, among whom are 11 C. Fer
guson aud Ward. The town Is almost deserted.
This morning Barrett & Cotton are reported to
have found paying claims, from which they have
taken S10 per day."
The finding is said to have been accidental A
man named Lowe, accompanied by his sou, wcro
out on a hunt. One night they camped on what
appeared to be a sandbar In the dry bed of a river.
The next xsorntrg they disc.n ered indications of
gold, and curing the day washed out S25 with the
means at hand. These men carried the news to
Snohomtth City, and a large number of men went
at once to the mines. There were fifty claims
located on Friday last. The news spread to the
logging camp?, md many of them were deserted.
heu the Fanny IaIc came down the river on Sat
urday almost the entire male population of the
valley were on their w ay to the mines. Tho mines
are about t"venty miles from this city. Steamers
can ascend the river to within twelve mite?, and
the remainder of the distance can be traveled by
c;yjocs.
A few men have been working in the vicinity
for years, making from S2 to S3 per day. Gold is
known to exit along the Suitan river, and those
who havebeen prospecting there are not surprised at
therecent developments. Still It is possible that the
large findings, as reported, arc only occasional de
posits and not general. There are now hundreds
of mcu in the mines, and we will soon be able to
give .something more defiuite.
