A LITTLE LESSON
IN ADVERSITY.
rM"M"M 1 I fMM 1 -m-H-m-l-
Tho story of Giuseppe Garibaldi
reads more like a romance tlyui a page
from the book of history. Although
ho was tho great
est patriot of Italy,
ho was born In
southern France In
1807.
Ills people were
poor, and when the
boy was 12 years
old he set out to
work as a sailor.
At 21 ho was In
command of n
brig, tho Cortesc.
Three times during
tho voyngo from
uiuskite oabidaldi. Franco to tho
Black Sea they wero plundered by tho
Greek pirates, at last being left starv
ing In tho hold of tho ship.
Garibaldi was taken III when tho ship
reached Constantinople and was cared
for by Italian oxlles there. Ho had no
money to pay tho expense of his Illness,
but through the kindness of his physi
cian ho found a placo to work. Onco
even with tho world ho returned to his
seafaring.
It was shortly after this that Gari
baldi cnino to know that tho great aim
of his life was to bo tho securing of
Itullau liberty and Italian unity. Tho
treaty of Vienna had parceled out Italy
to foreign rulers. Tho rule of Austria
was particularly hard uikjii tho Ital
ians, From this Garibaldi determined
to make effort to free Italy. Ho Joined
tho Mar.zlnl party. Their plan was dis
closed by a traitor and Garibaldi, llko
tho rest, was sentenced to death.
Ills escape to South America, his
lights for liberty there, his romantic
marriage, his return to Italy, his won
derful but fruitless campaign there are
chapters of his thrilling llfo story.
Defeated, pursued, penniless, over
come with grief at tho death of his Idol
ized wife, Garibaldi escaped to Amer
ica. Iu New York ho nuked aid from'
no one, but at onco began to make his
living by tho manufacture of caudles.
For a year and a half ho labored pa
tiently, then returned to the Hen, It
was at the end of thoso cruises that ho
returned to Italy, summoned for tho
great uprising. From that time suc
cess waited upon him, and tho cause lu
which ho labored was wou chlelly
through his own courage.
