Anocatry of tho Howe,
Professor Lydekker, In Knowledge
and Scientific News, discusses, In
,omo detail, the origin of tho modern
horse. He finds that tho horse of neo
lithic times was not specifically dis
tinct from the horso of the present
While there la no doubt that the horss
of that period was used by man for
food, there seema to be no conclusive
evidence aa to whether It waa domes
ticated or not Hl own opinion, how
ever. U that It waa probably domesti
cated. The horse of that time waa
closely allied to the tarpan, or semi
wild horse, that lived In southern Rus
sia up to a century ago. This was a
"hog-moned," short-legged, large-heod-ed
beast. It seems probable that the
domesticated horses of tho. Germans
of Caesar's time were derived from
this breed. The Egyptians had horses
as early as 1000 M. C. These were
long-maned, more like the Arab horses
and came froth Assyria. Where tho
Assyrians obtained them is unknown,
but it was probably from southern
Asia where this long-maned breed
has been developed, In all probability,
as the result of long-continued domes
tication. Our modern horse Is a cross
between these two breeds, with a fur
ther mlxturo of the Arab horse. This
Arab horse, too, was Itself n descend
ant of the earlier long-maned horse.
Tho origin of the long-maned horse Is
a matter of doubt, but Professor Ly
djkker thinks It may havo been from
extinct Indian specie.
fVHLN SCHOOL OPENSt
SOME "DON'IS" TOR PARENTS
Do not believe all that your children
tell you about school, There was only
one George Washington, nnd ho Is
dead.
Do not tell tho teacher t'mt Wll!io
will not lie. She probably knows bet
ter. Do not condemn tho teacher with
out n fair hearing. That Is accorded
to even the worst criminal. Thero aro
usually two sides to a story.
' Do not send n scathing note to the
teacher by Nellie, tho contents of
which she knows. Ilcr aggressive look
of triumph Is not soothing, and the
teacher Is only humnn.
Do not innko unfavorable comment
upon tho methods of tho teacher In
the presence of your child. Send hlin
to carry In the wood whllo you arc
doing so, If It must bo done.
Do not plead lack of time to visit the
school. There Is uo excuse for shirk
Ink a duty.
Do not reproach tho tenchcr with
tho fact that 'Tommy has not learned
n single thing the entire year." Bho
Is not rcspotiidblo for his lack of
brains.
Do not send a vr-rlml request to have
Jessie's sent changed. There Is often
no vacant scat, and one chnngo usu
ally means nt least half a dozen.
Do not expect tho teacher to mnn
ago without friction a child whom you
yourself havo never been nblo to con
trol. Do not Insist that the teacher Is
keeping your child back through spite.
She will hardly risk her reputation ns
nn Instructor to grntlfy n personal
grudge, however disagreeable tho child
may be.
Do not forget that the parent owes
a duty to tho tenchcr Just as surely as
the teacher does to tho child. AHco
