Tho parrot, for many years nome
whnt out of favor as a pet, has of lato
been steadily regaining popularity. He
Is certainly a bird of brains and beau
ty. Of his disposition less can be said
in commendation; his speaking voice,
however startlingly human, Is never
mellifluous: and his laugh Is tbcro
any sound more contemptuous, Irritat
ing, malevolent, even fiendish, than tho
hnrsb, shrieking laughter of a par
rot?
There Is also another fault, nlways
to le mentioned with due cbnrlty
since It Is not originally his own: his
deplorable tendency to the use of pro
rata laugunge. Indeed, the swearing
parrot, with his Innocently profnno In
trusions upon serious or sentimental
conversation, has become a stock per
sonugo In comic anecdote and litera
ture. Poor Polly! Even when ho does not
acquire bad language during his first
voyage away from his native wilds, he
mny learn otber things equally unde
sirable. An old Indy who hnd returned Jndlg.
nantly to the bird dealers one tine par
rot whose manner of speech was that
of Jack at sen In a storm, received lu
exchange n beautiful green creaturo
with a wise eye, recommended as of
Impeccable conversation.
"You'll find him everything he ought
to be. uia'nni." tbev assured lr.
"We'll warrant him twllte, refined nnd
Innocent You see, ho was brought
over in tho ladles' cnblii."
In a few days sho returned, her bon
net twinkling with wrath, bringing
Polly with her.
"You needn't tell me that parrot
swore, tnn'nni!" began tho denier,
when he saw her. "He couldn't swear;
he don't know how; he never henrd an
oath lu his life." r
"Swear!" said tho Irate old lady.
"No, he didn't swour; I'd nlmost rath
er ho would Bwear. I hung up his
cage lu tho dining-room, nnd for n few
days he didn't utter a sound. Then
one dny, when I hnd callers, ho began
making tho most awful sounds per
fectly dreadful sounds nnd kept It up
crowing and choking and gasping in
If ho never meant to stop; and then
nt the very end he sang out feebly,
'Steward bucket!' Take him back
and give mo a good, plain, evcry-dny,
Htny-nt-honio canary-bird. I'm dono
with parrots."
Poor, poor Polly! Truly, his Immi
gration and cducntlon are beset with
dttllculttcH. In tho forecastle the sail
ors are not sick, but they swear; In tho
cabin, tho Indies do not swear, but
they nro sick.
VANITY OF THE DOO.
It Kuuka with thut of the Muater or
tho MUtrcaa.
A dog's vanity ranks with his mas
ter's, not to mention that of his mis
tress. When a dog appears to poor
advantago ho kuows It, nnd Is pitiably
miserable. (Jlvo him nn opportunity
to shine and he'll emhraco It speedily.
Artists nlllrm that dogs who are too
Inzy to poso may bo appealed to
through their vanity.
Just sturt lu to study tho points of
nuothcr dog and pretend to transfer
them to canvas, and very speedily Mr.
I.azydog will come to Ills senses nnd
not only offer but Insist upon being tho
subject of tho painting.
One woman whoso splendid pet Is u
Great Dane was moved to put upon
him nn old bodlco of her mother's. Kho
was perfectly serious about It, so ho
ciuno readily and put Ills front paws
on her Inp. One pnw was thrust Into
ono sleeve, tho other Into tho opposlto
one, and then tho old-fashioned gar
mens was carefully buttoned down tuo
front. Tito necktie was knotted Jaunt
ily, while the coat-tall part of the bod
lco lltted smoothly ovor his shapely
buck.
lly way of a llttlo diversion tho own
er of tho old bodlco was called. Upon
entering tho room sho spoke to thu
dog, quite surprised nt his appeurauco.
Ho ran to her. Itoth laughed at the
comic flguro he cut. He entered Into
th spirit of tho thing with great gusto
nnd capered delightedly about, pleased
to inako a sensation.
Such a sight! With necktlo and coat
tails dangling and his shape carica
tured by tho garment, ho made his
owners laugh till the tears ran down
their cheeks. They positively laughed
till It hurt.
At last tho poor follow discovered
that ho was being laughed nt Instead
of with, and straightway ho dropped
his head as well as his tall and slunk
Into n corner. He was even funnier
that way tho black bodlco Just lltted
his woe. It didn't take much more
laughing to drive htm to tho cellar,
whore ho remained a couple of days,
a sadder If not a wiser dog. He was
made quite 111 and could hardly bo
coaxed to eat again. For a long tlmo
ho looked suspiciously at anyoue who
hiughed. And ull because he had been
made ridiculous. Philadelphia Record.
