Principal In Oncof America's Most Scn Biitloiidl Cubcb round, After Klcvcti Years, but AkiiIii Kscupcs-IiitcreHt' cil Two Continents. Ono of the most scnsntlonnl murders lu American criminal history wns that of Amos J. Snull, In Chicago, in 18S8. More than eleven years, many of which were spent In a vain attempt to run down tho murderer, have since elapsed and now comes a clew to the whereabouts of tho niucli-soiiKht'for criminal. A returned miner, William RlRler, from the Cape Nome gold dig gings In Alaska, gives the Information that may yet lead to the arrest and :onvlct!on of the murderer, Willie Tas cott According to Illgler. a man was car ried Into Ills caliln last rail In a criti cal condition. Tho stranger, believing that he was going to die, said that his name was Taseott and that he was a fugitive from Justice for the murder of Amos J. Siiell. Ho told of several cir cumstances connected with the crime, mentioning the fact that $30,000 had been offered for his capture. Instead of dying, the stranger recovered nnd then mysteriously disappeared. Hlgler and his partners at once took the trail md sent word to nil the near-by mining camps, but could get no trace of the missing man. It was plain he had not taken refuge In nny of the mining set tlements along the coast or In the near by Interior. Cape Nome Is on the sea coast, and after n long, fruitless search nigler nnd his fellow trailers became wu.lili: iascott. I An he nnpenred nl the I'me of the murder oloou yours ngo.j convinced that Taseott had made his way out to sea In a small boat and boardetl some passing whaler or trad ing vessel bound for the Arctic, lie would hardly run the risk of remaining In Alaska, when his story was known all over tho country. Amos .1. Snell, for whoso murde) Taseott Is wanted, was a rich man, well advanced In years, who lived lu an old-fashloncd mansion at the corner of Ada stivet and Washington boule vard, Chicago. lie was a largo owner of real estate In the Immediate vicin ity, the renting of which was conduct ed In an olllee In the basement of his house. One night lu the early part of February, ISSN, three men broke Into the Snell residence by boring a hole through a panel lu the rear door of tho lower lloor, ami then slipping the bolts. Their Ilrst move was to break open ami rllle a small safe lu the olllee, in which It was supposed Mr. Snell had consid erable money taken lu for rentals. Next they went upstairs to tho parlor lloor, where, lu moving around, they were heard by Mr. .Snell. The latter, a brave, during old man, canio down from Ills bedroom In his ulghtrobo, pis tol lu hand, and cried out: "Who's there? Ah, you d d scoundrel." As he spoke Mr. Snell llred n shot In tho direction of the back which was answered almost parlor, lu tho inmu Hash by two discharges from tho burglars' pistols. Snell dropped dead with two bullets lu his body. Tho murder created the most Intense excitement all over tho West Tho reward of $30,000 stimulated the po llco to unusual elTort, but for two weeks not the slightest clue to the mur derer was obtained. Then the keeper of a lodging house on West Madison street discovered lu the stovo In a room lately occupied by a man called T. A. Scott tho end of a charred cheek bearing the signature of A. J. Snell. A quantity cf stolen sllverwaro was also discovered. "Scott" had disappeared, but It took little work to Identify him as Willie Taseott, the son of a reputa ble paint dealer. Young Taseott was a wlhl lad, well known about town, lie never did any regular work but always had plenty of money, r.urglarles hail been frequent on the West Side nnd It mis an easy um'tter, In uny of devel opments, to trace mo.st of them to Tas eott. Search wns Immediately begun for the murderer, but although circulars descriptive of him were sent to every city and hamlet In the country and to ICurope. Asia, Africa, Canada and Cen tral and South America and no less than $l!3,000 was expended he was never apprehended. lie was seen tlce after the crime, but tho second time mysteriously disappeared and un til the ui'.nei's return was not heard of again. Fully 2,000 men were arrested on suspicion lu various parts of the world. Where Taseott Is now Is un mown, but search will bo resumed and hopes are eutertalued of ultimate cap ture. Tito Interruptions CijuaMl. A clergyman who had bepn greatly annoyed by the continued Interruption to which ho had boeu subjected durlug tho delivery of hl3 sermon, stopped abruptly, and looking round at the con gregation, spoke as follows: "Some time ngo, when delivering n sermon, I wns frequently Interrupted by a gentleman sitting In front of me, who gesticulated, moved about, nnd whispered to his neighbors, and nt last I addressed to him a sharp reprimand for his unseemly conduct. When tho service was over my clerk In the vestry mentioned the matter to me, and asked If I wns Ignorant of the fact that tho person addressed was an Idiot. I hnvo since then always hesitated to repri mand any of my own congregation for Interrupting tno In fenr that I may bo addressing an Idiot, who Is not respon sible for his actions." Slleneo reigned throughout tho deliv ery of the remnlnder of his sermon. Loudon Spare Moments. A FEARFUL SENTENCE. A Kcinnrlaililc Condemnation Made by u Jttilue but Not Kxccntctl. Judge Benedict, who was Assoclato Justice of the Supreme Court of New Mexico for thirteen years, from 1833, was an original character lu many ways. Ono Joso Maria Martin had been convicted lu his court of murder under a state of facts showing great brutality and with no mitigating cir cumstances, whereupon Judge Bene dict sentenced him to death In the fol lowing language: "Jose Maria Martin, stnud up. Jose Mnrla Martin, you have been Indicted, tried and convicted by n Jury of your countrymen of tho crime of murder, nnd the court Is now nbout to pass upon you the dread sentence of the law. As a usual thing, Jose Mnrla Martin, It Is n painful duty for the Judge of a court of Justice to pronounce upon a human being the sentence of death. There Is something horrible nbout It, nnd tho mind of the court naturally revolts from the performance of such n duty. Happily, however, your case Is relieved of all such unpleasant features, and the court takes positive delight lu sen tencing you to death. "You are a young mnn, Joso Mnrla Martin, apparently of good physical constitution and robust health. Ordi narily you might have looked forward to many years of life, and the court li; J no doubt you have, and have ex pected to die at a green old nge; but you are about to be cut off lu conse quence of your own act. Jose Mnrla Martin, It Is now the springtime: lu a little while the grass will bo spring ing up green In those beautiful valleys, and upon those broad mesas and moun tain sides (lowers will be blooming; birds will be singing their sweet carols, and Nature will be putting on her most gorgeous and most attractive robes, and life will be pleasant, nnd men will want to stay, but none of this for you, Jose Maria Martin; the flowers will not bloom for you, Jose Marin Martin; tho birds will not carol for you, Joso Maria Martin. When theso things como to gladden the senses of men you will be occupying a space about six by two beneath the sod, and the green grass and those beautiful flowers will be growing above your lowly head. "Tho sentence of the court Is that you bo taken from this place to the county Jail; that you be there kept safely and securely conllned In tho custody of tho sheriff until the day appointed for your execution. Be very careful, Mr. Sher iff, that he have no opportunity to es cape and that you have him nt the np IK)luted place and nt tho appointed time. That you be so kept, Joso Maria Martin, until Mr. Clerk, on what day of tho month does Friday, about two weeks from this time coinu? ('March 122, your honor') very well, until Fri day, tho 'JIM day of March, when you will be tnken by the sheriff from your placo of conlluement to some snfc and convenient spot within the county; this Is within your discretion, Mr. Sheriff you are only conllned to the limits of the county; nnd that you bo thero hanged by the neck until you arc dead, anil tho court was nbout to add, Jose Mnrla Martin, May Cod have mercy on your soul, but tho court will not as sumo tho responsibility of nsklng nn All-Wise Provldenco to do that which n Jury of your peers has refused to do, Tho Lord couldn't hnvo mercy on your soul. However, If you belong to nny religious organization, It might be well enough for you to send for your priest, or your minister, nnd get from him well such consolation as you can, but the court advises you to place no reli ance upon anything of that kind. Mr. Sheriff, remove the prisoner." It Is a pleasant sequel to this dread ful sentence that Joso Maria Martin escaped from Jail nud died peacefully several years ago by falling out of a wagon and breaking his neck. Ameri ca n Bar. JHmippolntoit Ono of tho oltlclals of tho Canadian police at Niagara Falls tells tho follow ing story: A German from Pennsylvania blow lu tho other day and asked the oltlclals If there was anything about the place worth seeing: "You see," he said, 'it's shust Hire d's: My frleuts Hud frau told me I should take Id In, und I vuut to take everytlng In dor Iss to zee. Dey d.d z:f- iL'r was sonuding groat here, und I forgot Id already, und I haf walked all ofer uud zee nodlugs." The visitor was at once tnken to the fluent view of the falls, where he stood a few minutes looking around. "Well" said his conductor at last. "Veil," returned the man. "I zee nodlngs." "Dou't you see the falls?" "Vot! Hot vater falling? Iss dot vat I cum all dls vnys to zee, a llddle vater dripping? Ach, Gott! I go me home." Columbian.
