The or ig ins o f Jackson Park trace back to Ju ly 10 , 1939 , when a loca l rancher , M . V i la te Jack son , dona ted the land to the C i ty o f Hood R iver . V i la te and her hus - band , Char les Jackson , owned land a long presen t - day H ighway 30 . The park was or ig ina l ly named Memor ia l Park in f the Women ’ s Re l ie f honor o , a Church o f the La t - Soc ie ty ter -Day Sa in t s ph i lan throp ic group , o f wh ich V i la te wa s the loca l pre s iden t . In 1942 , a tree wa s p lan ted and a mark - er p laced to ce lebra te the cen tenn ia l o f the soc ie ty . Over the decade s , the s i te became a ga ther ing p lace for fam i ly even t s , inc lud ing bar - becue s and dr ive - in mov ie s . The b igges t decade o f trans for ma t ion was the 1980s , when M ike Schend , former Hood R iver Commu - n i ty Educa t ion D irec tor , launched the Fam i l ie s in the Park ser ie s . A long w i th the concep t o f free mus ic and mov ie s in the park , Schend te s tage dreamed up a concre to hou se the fe s t iv i t ie s . The idea wasn ’ t popu lar in i t ia l ly . “They though t I wa s nu t s in the f irs t p lace ,” sa id Schend . “ I t wa s tough try ing l l th i s th ing .” to se Many saw the s teep in - c l ine and un ique ba s in s truc - ture o f Jack son Park a s a “wor th le s s p iece o f ground” for concer t s — too s teep for a band to p lay from , and a d i f - f icu l t p lace to ho s t an aud i - ence . Schend launched the Fam - i l ies in the Park ser ies in 1982 a s a mean s for “ fam i l ie s to come toge ther ,” bu t the program s tumb led a t f irs t . Due to the merc i le s s grade o f lope s , there wa s the park ’ s s nowhere to f i t a fu l l band or sound equ ipmen t . De spera te vo lun teer s a t temp ted s trap - p ing speakers to trees in some ca se s , Schend sa id . In 1984 , the Hood R iver L ions C lub dona ted a con - cre te pad to the park ’ s nor th - we s t corner (where the s tage now re s t s ) , bu t the p iece wa s mean t more for p icn ic s than for grand sca le concer ts . W i thou t a ra i sed p la t form , i t wa s s t i l l d i f f icu l t to see per - mer s from tha t spo t . for “ I t wa s t ime to come up w i th a so lu t ion to ‘Where are the en ter ta iner s go ing to per - form from ? ’” sa id Schend . F rom there , Schend drummed up suppor t . He re - que s ted tha t the C i ty Counc i l pu t the i s sue on the ir agen - da , and they agreed . Then , he reached ou t to loca l bus i - ne s se s for dona t ion s . By the end o f 1985 , h i s fundra is ing e f for t s through Commun i ty Educa t ion genera ted $5 ,600 . s t ima ted co s t However , the e o f the s tage wa s more than tr ip le tha t a t $20 ,000 . I t was a comb ina t ion o f luck and generos i ty tha t sea led the park ’ s crea t ion . Labor was one o f the b ig g es t loom ing cos ts . Schend cou ldn ’ t f ind a source o f sk i l led vo lun teer labor un t i l he spoke w i th John Brennan , who taugh t the h igh schoo l ’ s cons truc - t ion c la s s . I t turned ou t the c la s s had been unab le to se l l the ir mo s t recen t hou se , and s look ing for an - Brennan wa o ther venue in wh ich to p ly the ir sk i l l s . “He (Brennan ) sa id he wou ld love to do i t so h i s s tu - den t s wou ld have a pro jec t ,” sa id Schend . Then , severa l bus inesses ro se to the occa s ion for the ma ter ia l componen t o f the pro jec t .
